Softball Wins Two At Long Beach State Invitational

LONG BEACH, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Washington softball team (4-1) won a pair of games today over Santa Clara (1-0) and San Diego State (7-6) to round out the Long Beach State Invitational with a 4-1 record.
Washington won the opener versus Santa Clara, 1-0 with a two-out rally in the third inning. Courtney Jeffries sparked the Huskies with a triple to right field and scored on an Amanda Oleson single to right.
Tia Bollinger picked up the shutout victory as she held the Broncos to two hits, while striking out six.
The nightcap proved to be a barnburner with Washington coming out on top 7-6 in 11 innings. San Diego State jumped out to the 3-0 lead, scoring one run in the second frame and adding two more in the fourth.
Momentum shifted in the sixth inning, with the Huskies evening the score at 3-3 on four hits. Washington loaded the bases with three straight singles by Jeffries, Oleson and Kristen Rivera. Dena Tyson then doubled to centerfield to score two runs. Sarah Hyatt followed with a single to centerfielder to plate pinch runner Jessica Wilkinson.
The game headed into extra-innings with the international tiebreaker rule in effect that puts a runner on second base to start each inning.
The Aztecs struck first, scoring a run on a two out single to right field in the ninth inning.
Washington answered in the bottom half of the frame, scoring Tyson from second on a single up the middle by Aimee Minor.
San Diego State came back with two runs in the 10th on two hits and a Husky error.
UW knotted the score again in the bottom of the 10th, scoring two runs with singles by Oleson and Kathy Fiske.
Washington put the game away in the 11th, scoring Robyn Wike from second base on a single by Dominique Lastrapes to left field.
Bollinger (3-1) earned the win, pitching 1.2 innings of relief, giving up one hit and striking out two. Starting pitcher Ashley Boek scattered 10 hits over 9.1 innings, striking out 10.
The Huskies play next weekend at the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tempe, Ariz.
