TEMPE, Ariz.- The fifth-ranked Washington softball team (6-1) notched a pair of mercy-rule victories today to open the Fiesta Bowl Classic. The Huskies topped Syracuse 11-1 in the opener and 10th-ranked Texas 14-4 in the nightcap.
Tia Bollinger picked up both wins for Washington, holding the Orangewomen to one run with seven strikeouts and allowing no runs against Texas in three innings of relief.
Sophomore Sarah Hyatt was the highlight of the night, driving in seven runs against Texas, including a home run and a game-ending grand slam. Freshman Dominique Lastrapes also had a strong showing at the plate, hitting 6-for-8, including a pair of doubles this evening.
Washington opened the floodgates in the third inning against Syracuse, scoring seven runs on six hits. Lastrapes kicked off the inning with a single through the left side and UW loaded with bases with back-to-back walks by Rita Roach and Kristen Rivera. The Huskies then strung four hits together, including doubles by Amanda Oleson and Hyatt to score five runs. Senior Courtney Jeffires hit a sacrifice fly to score Dena Tyson and Lastrapes's second hit of the inning drove in Hyatt.
The Huskies scored four more runs in the top of the fifth inning on two hits and an error. Lastrapes led off the frame with a stand up double to left-centerfield and scored on a Robyn Wike double. Callie Bergan followed with a sacrifice fly and the Huskies scored two more on an error and a hit batsman.
Syracuse scored its lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning on two hits but it wouldn't be enough as Washington's lead invoked the mercy-rule victory.
Texas scored two runs in the top of the first inning on one hit and a UW error to open the nightcap. The Huskies responded with a run in the bottom half of the frame. Lastrapes opened the inning with a double to left-centerfield and moved to third after a hit-by-pitch and walk loaded the bases. Oleson was then hit by a pitch to score Lastrapes.
The Longhorns pushed their lead to three in the third inning, scoring two runs on two hits and an error to take the 4-1 lead.
Washington chipped at the lead in the fourth when Hyatt hit a two-run home run to right-centerfield.
The Huskies poured on five more runs in the fifth inning, picking up RBIs by Fiske, Hyatt and Lastrapes to make the score 8-4.
Washington put the game away in the sixth inning when Hyatt belted a grand slam over the centerfield fence to invoke the eight-run mercy-rule.
The Huskies had 11 hits and 12 RBIs in the game.
UW continues tournament action tomorrow with a game against Texas Tech at 1:30 and a match-up against 18th-ranked Texas A&M at 3:30 p.m. The Texas A&M match-up will include a live radio broadcast that can be accessed on the Aggies' web site at www.AggieAthletics.com.
