CORVALLIS, OR - Brina Chaney had a game-high 19 points and Leilani Estavan added 16 points and a season-best eight assists as Oregon State's women's basketball team pulled out a 62-59 victory against University of Washington on Thursday night in Gill Coliseum.
With the victory, Oregon State improves to 13-9 on the season and 7-6 in Pacific-10 Conference action, while Washington falls to 13-10 overall and 6-8 in conference play.
Neither team led by more than three points in the closely contested second half. UW took advantage of a commanding 25-11 edge on the offensive glass to keep the game close, despite shooting only 34-percent from the field.
The Huskies managed just one field goal in the final six minutes of the game, while the Beavers rallied from a 57-54 deficit behind five free throws and a lay-up by Chaney.
Husky all-star Giuliana Mendiola hoisted a 3-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer, but the shot caromed off the rim and the Beavers held on for the victory.
"I was really proud of our team," said OSU head coach Judy Spoelstra. "In the second half we really put together a lot of hustle plays, and that made the difference."
Chaney buried 7-of-10 shots from the field, pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, and matched her season-best with six blocked shots. The senior post has reached double figures in scoring during a team-high 13 games this season.
"Brina has been our most consistent player this season," said Spoelstra. "She's playing the best ball of her career right now."
Estavan became the first player in OSU history to score 1,000 points (1,015) and dish out 500 assists (536) in her career, after hitting 5-of-9 shots, including a trio of 3-pointers. Estavan needs just 13 dishes to become the Oregon State all-time assists leader.
Four Husky players reached double figures in scoring, led by Mendiola's 17 points on 8-of-18 shooting. Freshman Cameo Hicks finished with a double-double, recording 13 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
UW attempted 77 field goals in the game (26-for-77), compared to a 20-for-45 shooting clip by Oregon State.
Washington opened a 7-0 lead to start the game, but the Beavers used an 18-4 run over an eight-minute stretch to get back into the contest and eventually take a 31-30 advantage at the half.
Oregon State returns to action on Saturday when the Beavers host Washington State University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
