BERKELEY, Calif. - Tyler Davidson's RBI double in the 11th inning broke a 7-7 tie as the Washington baseball team beat California, 10-7, Sunday at Evans Diamond to move into sole possession of second place in the Pac-10 Conference, completing its first series sweep of the season.
The Huskies (20-19-1 overall, 8-4 in the Pac-10) moved a half game ahead of Arizona State (9-6 league play) for second place in the conference, trailing only USC by a game and a half. Cal fell to 26-22 overall and 8-10 in the conference.
Davidson, a junior from Edmonds (Meadowdale) lined a double to the wall in left-center field, driving in Jay Garthwaite (Kent/Kent-Meridian) from first base. Garthwaite had drawn a walk off of Cal reliever Blake Read (1-2), who took the loss. A single from Mike Wagner (Woodinville) drove in Davidson and Wagner moved to second on a wild pitch and came in on a single from Michael Done (Littleton, Colo.) to account for the final tally.
UW sophomore Brian Carter (Woodinville) struck out the only batter he faced with a runner at second in the 10th inning to get the win while junior Tyler Shepple (Arvada, Colo.) threw the 11th inning for his fifth save of the year.
The Bears scored a single run in the first inning to take the early lead. With two outs, second baseman Carson White doubled to the gap in right-center and scored on a single up the middle from first baseman Conor Jackson.
In the top of the second, the Huskies posted a pair of two-out runs. With runners at second and third, second baseman Greg Isaacson (Aberdeen) hit an 0-2 pitch to center field for a single, driving in both runners to give Washington a 2-1 lead.
In the third, Davidson belted a long home run to left field with Wagner aboard to make the UW's lead 4-1. It was the sixth homer of the year for the Huskies' cleanup hitter.
Washington tacked on a fifth run in the fourth off of Cal reliever Joe Todoroff when Isaacson doubled and then scored on a double from freshman Taylor Johnson (Vancouver/Skyview).
Cal closed the gap to 5-3 with two more two-out runs in the fourth. Justin Nelson's double scored Brian Horwitz with the first run. Nelson then scored on a single from shortstop Jeff Dragicevich. The Huskies, however, got the two runs back in the fifth when Wagner, the UW designated hitter, went the opposite way with a two-run homer.
After UW starter Clay Johnson (Elma) left the game at the start of the sixth inning, the Bears got back into the game with three runs. After a sacrifice fly had plated one run, shortstop Jeff Dragicevich belted a two-run homer to left to leave UW with a 7-6 edge.
The Bears tied it in the eighth when catcher John Baker doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single from Nelson.
With the scored tied at 7-7 in the top of the ninth, Davidson flied out to deep right field as Cal's Brian Horwitz seemingly robbed the Husky junior of a home run, or at least extra bases off the top of the fence.
The Huskies' sweep was their first since taking three games from Southern Utah early in the 2001 season. Since breaking a seven-game losing streak, the Huskies have won eight of their last 12.
The Huskies return to Husky Ballpark for their next five games. Next Friday through Sunday, UCLA visits for a three-game league series. May 7 and 8, Portland comes to Seattle for a pair of non-conference games.
