SEATTLE - UCLA starter Mike Kunes threw a three-hit complete game to lead the Bruins to an 8-1 win over the Washington baseball team Friday night at Husky Ballpark in the first game of a three-game Pac-10 series.
Kunes, a junior lefty from Chatsworth, Calif., upped his record to 7-3 on the season while the Bruins improved to 21-26 overall and 6-7 in the conference. Kunes allowed a single, a double and a solo homer -- all by UW right fielder Tyler Davidson (Edmonds/Meadowdale) -- while walking only one and striking out seven in his first career complete game. He faced only four batters over the minimum on the night.
Husky starter Shawn Kohn, a senior from Woodinville, fell to 9-3, allowing 13 hits and eight runs in seven and two-thirds innings. He walked one (intentionally) and struck out six. Washington, still in second place in the Pac-10, fell to 20-20-1 on the season and 8-5 in the Pac-10.
Kohn, who'd allowed only one run total over his last outings (both complete games), gave up four to the Bruins over the first five innings. In the first, Rashad Parker singled and Wes Whisler doubled to put runners at second and third for catcher Josh Arhart, who grounded out to plate the run.
Nick Lyon, a senior from Monroe, Wash., belted a solo homer in the second, and in the fourth, he doubled and eventually came around on a fielder's choice grounder from right fielder Matt Thayer.
Whisler's ninth homer of the season, a solo shot to left in the fifth, gave the Bruins a 4-0 lead.
UCLA tacked on four more in the eighth. Adam Berry's double drove in one run and Ryan McCarthy sent home another with a sacrifice fly before Thayer plated the final two Bruin runs with a single.
The Huskies avoided the shutout when Davidson belted his seventh homer of the year with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Whisler finished with three hits on the day, adding a single to his double and homer. McCarthy, Arhart, Lyon and third baseman Brandon Averill each added two hits.
The Huskies and Bruins play the second game of the series Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The game will air live on Fox Sports Net and on radio at KKNW AM-1150.
