Washington at Washington State
Notes --
Sophomore center Andrea Lalum scored a career-high 25 points on 9-of-18 from the field and 6-of-10 from the line. Her previous high was 22 points, also against WSU, in the first meeting this season back on Dec. 21.
Washington extends its streak over Washington State to 14 games.
Washington Head Coach June Daugherty
"Their pressure created problems with our timing. We were uncharacteristic about taking care of the basketball. In the second half, Andrea (Lalum) came out and put the team on her back. She stepped up and played a great game.
"We were not happy with our first half, but we showed character and resolve and worked through it. It was not a pretty basketball game by any stretch of the imagination. But we talked about it at halftime and stepped it up. We're going to take what teams give us defensively. Loree (Payne) and Kayla (Burt) stepped up big in the second half. A lot of our offense came off steals.
"I have all the confidence in our team and our ability to shoot the three, but we'll take the inside looks as well as the three.
(on being down by nine points in the second half): "I saw confidence in the team. They didn't have their heads down. I was confident we would get back in it and they were confident. We had to stoke it up defensively.
"You have to respect your opponent and you better be ready to play every game. We were a step slow and Washington State took advantage. We got more physical and stepped it up and our offense came around."
Sophomore Andrea Lalum
"We needed to play at our pace, play our game. In the second half we picked it up. We knew we needed to get on a run. We knew we needed to pick it up on offense and defense.
"We always have struggled on the road. It's a long bus trip over here. But we know we have to come out strong. It's a challenge. We have to respond. It's a challenge and we are going right back out on the road next week.
"We weren't physical enough. I take it personally. We have to take it upon ourselves to get physical. They crashed the boards hard. Offensively, they were strong. We knew that coming in.
"It was great to have my Mom here (from Montana). It's the first Pac-10 game she has seen. But I knew I had to come out fired up. I've been in a little bit of a slump lately. I had to get over it. My Mom is my biggest fan and it was wonderful to see her here."
Junior Loree Payne
"We had a big run in the second half. The team responded well to the adversity. Kayla (Burt) came up with some huge steals and layins and that got us going. Our shots were open and we took them. The momentum definitely switched to us at that point. It was a definite momentum-turner."
