SEATTLE - UW senior Kelly Hauxhurst's (Westminster, Calif.) pair of RBI-singles lifted 12th-ranked Washington past 14th-ranked Oregon State, 2-1, Friday in Pac-10 softball action at Husky Softball Stadium. With the win, the Huskies moved to 34-19 overall and 8-8 in conference play, while the Beavers fell to 40-20-1 and 7-8 in the Pac-10.
Oregon State broke through with the game's first run when Brooke Rutschman tripled over UW centerfielder Rita Roach's (Norwalk, Calif.) head to lead-off the inning, and then came home on an RBI single up the middle by shortstop Shawna Feldt.
The Huskies answered in their next at-bat as Roach and junior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) both reached base on back-to-back singles with two outs. Hauxhurst then laced a single through the right side to score Roach from second base and tie the game at 1-1.
Two innings later, Hauxhurst once again came through with a clutch RBI-single to shallow center field, scoring Simpson, who had singled and then stole second base.
The Beavers tried to rally in the top of the seventh when lead-off hitter Michelle Notaro singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rutschman. OSU leftfielder Michelle Chariton then reached base on a UW fielding error, but Notaro was unable to advance to third on the play.
The next batter, Feldt, followed with a hard chopper that tipped off of Washington pitcher Tia Bollinger's (Santa Ana, Calif.) glove to Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) at shortstop. Clark then shoveled the ball over to senior Christie Rosenblad (Fillmore, Calif.) for the force out at second base. Notaro, who was running on the play, attempted to score, but was thrown out at the plate by Rosenblad to end the game.
With the win, Bollinger moved to 30-5 in 2001, scattering six hits through seven innings, while striking out five. OSU pitcher Monica Hoffman, who had relieved starter Crystal Draper in the fifth inning, took the loss to fall to 11-10.
Washington plays host to its final two regular season home games Saturday and Sunday versus Pac-10 foe Oregon. Saturday's game, which is being broadcast live by FOX Sports Net, will begin at 2 p.m., while Sunday's game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
