SEATTLE - Ninth-ranked Arizona State scored one run in the third and two in both the fourth and fifth innings to defeat 14th-ranked Washington, 5-1, Saturday in Pac-10 softball action at the Husky Softball Stadium. With the loss, the Huskies fell to 25-13 overall and 3-2 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils moved to 29-9 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
The Sun Devils, coming off their 6-1 upset of top-ranked UCLA Friday, scored the game's first run in the top of the third when designated player Kirsten Voak walked and came around to score on a two-out RBI single to right field by Nichole Thompson.
After Arizona State added to its lead with a two-run outburst in the top of the fourth, UW senior Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.) got her team's first hit of the game with a lead-off double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hauxhurst then scored when sophomore Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) belted a hard ground ball through the right-side of the infield into right field.
The Sun Devils regained their three-run lead a inning later, tallying one run on a RBI ground-out by freshman Kristen Swetel and adding another on a bases-loaded walk, to move to a 5-1 advantage.
The UW had runners in scoring position in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Hauxhurst struck out on a called third strike in the fifth and sophomore catcher Amy Hanson (Mt. Vernon, Wash.) went down swinging with runners at the corners in the sixth.
Washington starting pitcher Shannon Walsh (Covina, Calif.) took the loss in the circle to fall to 2-10 on the season, while Arizona State starter Erica Beach helped her team break a six-game losing skid to the Huskies, improving to 14-5 in 2001.
The Huskies will look to even the series as they play host to the Sun Devils for a single game Sunday, beginning at 1 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on KSRB-1150 AM and will be shown on a tape-delay basis by FOX Sports Northwest at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 9.
