SEATTLE - Ninth-ranked Arizona State used a four-run seventh inning to break open a 2-1 game, defeating 14th-ranked Washington, 6-1, Sunday at the Husky Softball Stadium. With the loss, the Huskies fell to 25-14 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-10, while the Sun Devils improved to 30-9 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
The Sun Devils, who also defeated the UW 5-1 Saturday, scored first when designated player Erica Beach hit a long solo home run to right field in her first at-bat in the top of the second inning.
Washington then evened the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third when freshman Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) doubled to lead-off the inning and then scored on a base-hit up the middle from senior Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.).
Arizona State broke the tie in the top of the fourth inning with what proved to be the game-winner as Nichole Thompson scored from second following a two-out single by freshman Phelan Wright, which bounced off UW pitcher Tia Bollinger's (Santa Ana, Calif.) glove past shortstop Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) into left field.
The Sun Devils then added to their lead in the seventh, scoring four unearned runs on a pair of RBI doubles and a bunt single.
The Huskies were unable to reach base in the final four innings, as Arizona State pitcher Kirsten Voak allowed just three hits and struck out 12 to move to 11-3 overall.
Bollinger, meanwhile, lost just her first game in her last 14 decisions, falling to 23-3 in 2001. Bollinger did, however, set a Washington school record for most strikeouts in a season by a true freshman pitcher, logging six against the Sun Devils to move her season total to 160.
The Huskies will take a break from their Pac-10 season schedule Tuesday, April 10, when they play host to Portland State for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at the Husky Softball Stadium.
