SEATTLE - The 13th-ranked Washington softball team hit six home runs in two games to sweep non-conference foe Portland State, 9-0 and 8-0, Wednesday at the Husky Softball Stadium. With the wins, the Huskies moved to 27-14 overall, while the Vikings fell to 15-21, as both games lasted five innings due to the eight-run rule.
In the first game, Washington scored in its first at-bat, as senior Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.) came home when sophomore Jaime Clark (Tustin, Calif.) was caught in a run-down between second and third with the bases-loaded.
Two inning later, Clark struck again, blasting her ninth home run of the year deep over the left field fence to also score freshmen Nicki Holt (Camarillo, Calif.) and Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.). Senior Christie Rosenblad (Fillmore, Calif.) increased the Husky lead to 5-0 two batters later, lifting a solo home run, her seventh of the year, to left field.
Starting UW pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.), who picked up the complete-game shutout to move to 24-3 overall, helped her own cause in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a two-run home run to left field. Bollinger's classmate, freshman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.), finished the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run home run to right field to end the game at 9-0.
Oleson hit her second home run of the day in the second half of the doubleheader, as the Huskies erupted for eight runs on 11 hits. The UW scored three runs in both the first and second innings, before tallying another in the bottom of the third on a RBI single through the left-side by junior pitcher Shannon Walsh (Covina, Calif.).
Washington senior Kim DePaul (Tomball, Texas) ended the game with an exclamation point in the bottom of the fifth, knocking a lead-off home run, which bounced off the Husky scoreboard in straight-away center field, to advance the score to 8-0.
Walsh, who earned the win to move to 3-10 overall, combined with freshman reliever Megan Owen (Spokane, Wash.) to one-hit the Vikings and record the team's 14th shutout of the season. Portland State pitcher Morgan Seibert (11-12) took the loss in the opener, while Nichole Ivie (4-9) was the losing pitcher in the second game.
Washington travels to top-ranked UCLA Thursday for a two-game Pac-10 series with the Bruins, April 13-14, at Easton Stadium.
