SEATTLE - The 13th-ranked Washington softball team stayed perfect at home with a 10-5 victory Sunday over non-conference foe Texas at the Husky Softball Stadium. The Huskies, who beat the Longhorns 11-0 Saturday, moved to 17-7 with the win, while the Longhorns fell to an even 12-12 in 2001.
The UW scored in double-digits for the second straight day behind a four-run effort in both the first and second innings, while adding two more in the bottom of the fourth. In first inning, however, Texas got on the board first when Lindsay Gardner scored on a sacrifice fly to make the score 1-0.
In the Huskies' first at-bat, freshman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) drove in the team's first run with a single to center field to score classmate Rita Roach (Norwalk, Calif.) from third. Seniors Kim DePaul (Tomball, Texas) and Christie Rosenblad (Fillmore, Calif.) then each tallied RBI hits as DePaul recorded her first double of the season to drive in two runs, while Rosenblad dropped a perfectly placed bunt single in front of home plate to score Oleson and give the Huskies a 4-1 advantage.
The Longhorns responded to the challenge in the top of the second, reclaiming the lead at 5-4 with four runs on three hits off both UW starting pitcher Shannon Walsh (Covina, Calif.) and relief pitcher Tia Bollinger (Santa Ana, Calif.).
The UW matched the Texas scoring total in the second after sophomore Jaime Clark's (Tustin, Calif.) infield single scored Roach and Longhorn starting pitcher Natalie King walked both Oleson and DePaul with the bases-loaded. Rosenblad drove in the inning's final run with a sacrifice fly to left field, to make the score 8-5.
Washington would later add a pair of insurance runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Oleson and Rosenblad to give the Huskies a 10-5 advantage.
Bollinger, who pitched 5.2 innings and struck out six, earned her 15th win of the season to move to 15-2 overall, while King fell to 7-5.
Washington will be back in action next Thursday, March 15, in Fullerton, Calif., for the Kia Klassic, a tournament that the UW won a year ago. The Huskies will play three pool games versus Hawaii, Texas and New Mexico State, before beginning bracket play on Friday.
