FULLERTON, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Washington softball team was shutout for the first time this season, falling to Texas, 12-0, Thursday evening in day one action of the Kia Klassic at Cal State Fullerton. The Huskies, who had beaten the Longhorns twice in a two-game series in Seattle last weekend, fell to 18-8 overall and 1-1 in tournament play.

The Longhorns got on the board early when catcher Marlo Hanks hit a two-run home run off UW starting pitcher Shannon Walsh (Covina, Calif.) in the top of the first inning. Texas then added another run in the top of the third following a pair of Husky throwing errors to move the score to 3-0.

The Huskies, meanwhile, struggled at the plate, reaching base for the first time in the top of the third on a one-out single by freshman Courtney Jeffries (Eugene, Calif.). Washington's only real offensive threat of the game came an inning later as junior Becky Simpson (Tumwater, Wash.) and senior Kelly Hauxhurst (Westminster, Calif.) were stranded at third and second when freshman Amanda Oleson (Agoura Hills, Calif.) grounded out to second base to end the inning.

With UW freshman Megan Owen (Spokane, Wash) making her collegiate pitching debut in relief of Walsh, the Longhorns scored a pair of runs in the fifth and then tallied seven more in the seventh inning to round out scoring at, 12-0.

Walsh took the loss to fall to 2-5 in 2001, while Texas pitcher Charla Moore moved to 6-7 with a three-hit, complete-game shutout. The Longhorns also earned their first victory over the UW in the two schools' eight-game all-time series.

The Huskies conclude pool play at the Kia Klassic Friday with a 9 a.m. game against New Mexico State.
