Steinbach Secures Third Big Ten Freshman of the Week Award
March 02, 2026 | Men's Basketball
ROSEMONT, Ill. – Posting a pair of 20-plus point double doubles, Washington forward Hannes Steinbach has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the third time, announced Monday by the league office.
The back-to-back showings bring the German international's double double total for the season to 18, not only a school record but tied for the most by a Big Ten freshman since the 1996-97 season. Steinbach is tied for the second most double doubles in the nation
The Würzburg, Germany, native put on a show to lead the Huskies to a 79-72 win at Rutgers, snatching 16 rebounds to tie his career-high and converting 9-of-13 shot attempts and 6-of-7 free throws to finish with 24 points. The do-it-all forward also chipped in three blocks and a steal against the Scarlet Knights.
Four days later, on a day in which his countryman Detlef Schrempf had his No. 22 jersey number immortalized, Steinbach knocked down 8-of-11 field goals en route to 22 points against Wisconsin. The freshman phenom also grabbed 11 boards on the day and added a pair of steals and a block.
Steinbach and the Huskies close out their home schedule on Wednesday, hosting USC on Senior Day at Alaska Airlines Arena. Washington will conclude the regular season on the weekend at Oregon.
