COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Seniors Nathan Green and Kyle Reinheimer added to the Husky travel crew on its way to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, as the pair of school record-holders advanced through NCAA West Prelims on the meet's third day. Green made his fourth-straight NCAA final site in the 1,500-meters, while Reinheimer booked his first ever outdoor nationals at 800-meters.
The men's half of West Prelims wrapped up today at Texas A&M's E.B. Cushing Stadium, with a final day of women's competition coming on Saturday. Green and Reinheimer will be joined by men's pole vaulter Scott Toney to make up the men's squad at NCAAs in Eugene, Ore. from June 11-14.
Green, the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Champion at 1,500-meters, and the 2025 NCAA Indoor mile runner-up, took the lead going into the final lap of his quarterfinal heat. An Oregon runner passed him on the backstretch but Green responded, going back in front and pulling away to cross the line first in 3:46.47. In four trips to West Prelims over the last four years, Green has successfully advanced through the first round and quarterfinals every time, going 8-for-8.
Reinheimer, the grad transfer who lowered the Husky 800m record earlier this year to 1:46.09 at the Bryan Clay Invite, kept his breakout year going with a second-place finish in the first 800-meter quarterfinal. Reinheimer made a decisive move into the lead with 200-meters left, and while he surrendered the lead shortly before the line, he was safely and securely in the top-three to move on. His time of 1:46.82 was third-fastest overall today.
Also in the 1,500-meters today, freshman Martin Barco just missed out on a trip to nationals, as he had the unenviable 13th overall placing. Barco was eighth in his heat in a time of 3:41.28, which was just one spot away from getting the final time qualifier.
Fellow freshman Bodi Ligons also wrapped up his impressive debut season as he finished 18th overall in the 400m hurdles quarterfinals in 51.21 seconds. Ligons came in seeded just 37th overall, vastly outperforming his ranking.
Yet another West Prelims debut came from redshirt freshman Isaac Briggs in the steeplechase. Briggs also improved on his entry seed, as he was 29th overall and finished 23rd today, running 8:54.61 in the Texas humidity.
One heat after Reinheimer punched his ticket to nationals, Justin O'Toole ran out of gas on his final lap, placing eighth in his quarterfinal in 1:50.30 to wrap his collegiate season. O'Toole was a First Team All-American indoors but an injury unfortunately kept him out of action for most of outdoors, only returning two weeks ago at Big Tens.
Four Dawgs closed things out in the 5,000-meters tonight. Acer Iverson was 27th overall in 13:53.19, Jamar Distel was 30th in 14:00.91, Evan Jenkins finished 39th in 14:12.45, and Leo Daschbach was 14:30.28
The very first mark of the day was one of the best, as junior Tim Luebbert led off with an all-conditions career-best triple jump, going a wind-aided 51-5 3/4. That would wind up placing Luebbert 21st overall, a big improvement on his No. 39 seeding coming in.
Trevontay Smith also went 50-9 1/2 to finish 26th overall in the triple jump, and Roman Hutchinson was 40th at 48-5 1/4.
Washington's women still have 10 entries to come on Saturday, starting with Kaia Tupu-South in the discus at 11 a.m. PT, then the rest comes on the track beginning at 3:15 p.m.
