Women Add Five More Qualifiers For NCAAs
May 31, 2025 | Track & Field
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Husky women's track squad will have a program-record nine entries at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in two weeks in Eugene, after five more Dawgs made the cut today at NCAA West Prelims, hosted by Texas A&M. Washington put three women into the 1,500-meters field, one through in the steeplechase, and two in the 5,000-meters, with Amina Maatoug punching her ticket in both the 1,500m and the 5k.
Washington's travel roster to Hayward Field will have 11 total athletes, eight women and three men, fighting for national titles, All-America finishes and team points from June 11-14. The Huskies have had seven women's entries at NCAA Outdoors several times in recent years, most recently in 2023, but nine establishes a new high.
The first to qualify were the 1,500-meters trio. Big Ten Champion Sophie O'Sullivan led gun to tape in the first quarterfinal heat to earn a third-straight NCAA Outdoor appearance. She took the win in 4:08.21. Claire Yerby was eighth in the same heat in 4:15.11, finishing 15th overall, just a couple places shy of earning a ticket as well.
In the second quarterfinal, Chloe Foerster and Amina Maatoug were running middle of the pack late and needed to make a move. Foerster had the fastest final lap in the field and moved up to finish fourth overall in a flying 4:06.74 to earn her second-straight NCAA Outdoor appearance. Maatoug fought to the finish and snagged the final time qualifier, running a new PR of 4:10.34, and moving up to No. 3 in school history behind O'Sullivan and Foerster.
Next to join the squad was senior Maggie Liebich, who continued to shine as a steeplechaser, in just the third steeple of her career. Liebich was second in her quarterfinal heat in 9:53.74, securing the first individual NCAA Championships appearance of her career.
The night wrapped up in the 5,000-meters, with Maatoug back in the mix in the first of the two 24-woman heats, less than three hours after her 1,500-meter race. Maatoug went out conservatively, sitting in the pack until the pace started to increase and she worked her way up the field. Finally she showed her mile speed late, breaking away from a pack of women who were battling for second-place. Maatoug crossed in 15:49.52, securing second-place and one of the five auto-qualifying spots. Maatoug will be the first Husky in the current qualifying format to attempt the 1,500-5,000 double.
In the next 5k heat, two New Mexico women broke away from the pack leaving the rest of the field fighting for three more auto-qualifying spots. Junior Julia David-Smith and sophomore Mia Cochran were at the front of that pack throughout. As the bell lap came, David-Smith stayed strong and kicked to front of the chase pack and took third overall in 15:54.92, earning the first individual NCAA bid of her career, after coming in seeded just 20th in the West. Cochran was running in fifth around the final turn, trying to grab the last qualifying spot, but unfortunately she stumbled and fell around twenty meters from the finish. Cochran was able to get up and still finish ninth in the heat in 16:08.76, but it was a heartbreaking end to an otherwise fantastic day for the Dawgs.
The first competitor today was Kaia Tupu-South, competing in her second event of the week. She threw the discus today, getting a best of 166-5 on her third-round attempt. That would place her 34th overall out of the field of 48 and wrap up her collegiate season.
Stephanie Driscoll also took her shot at nationals in the 800-meter quarterfinals, but ran out of gas late in her heat. Driscoll came through seventh in her section, in 2:06.21, which was good for 19th overall to cap off her first collegiate campaign.
