Moll Breaks NCAA Outdoor Pole Vault Record
May 03, 2025 | Track & Field
TUCSON, Ariz. β Amanda Moll returned to her record-breaking ways in just her second competition during the outdoor track season. The sophomore superstar broke the NCAA Outdoor Record in the pole vault for the first time at the Desert Heat Classic today, after setting the Indoor Record four times earlier this year.
Β
Since winning the NCAA Indoor Championship back in March, going 1-2 with sister Hana, Amanda had only competed once, clearing 14-4 at the Stanford Invitational, a strong mark by almost any standard but not the jaw-dropping heights of her indoor marks. Today she was back in rarefied air, clearing 15-7 1/4 (4.76-meters) to break the outdoor record set just this season by D-II athlete Brynn King, by one centimeter.
Β
King, a 2024 Paris Olympian, went 15-7 at the Texas Relays in March, which broke former Husky Olivia Gruver's outdoor collegiate record of 15-6 1/4 (4.73m) that was set in 2019.
Β
Amanda needed a third attempt at her opening height of 14-1 3/4 but then got rolling from there. She had second-attempt makes at 14-9 1/2 and 15-0 3/4, then a first-attempt make at 15-3, then cleared the record bar on a second try. She stopped at that point and did not go after the 16-foot bar that she made twice indoors.
Β
Hana Moll was also attacking 15-7 1/4 but did not get it today. But she also made 15-3 on a first attempt, which was a new outdoor PR. Amanda and Hana now are back at No. 1 and No. 2 in the NCAA D-I rankings for this outdoor season, which will give the women's team ranking a big boost next week.
Β
Jumps/Vault
Β
All-American Prestin Artis connected on the best long jump of his season and his best-ever outdoors, as he flew a wind-aided 25-10 in the sixth round to take second overall. His second-best jump today of 25-6 3/4 was also a season-best until his final leap bettered it. It moves him up to 11th in the NCAA and 7th in the West Region.
Β
Also in the men's long jump, Tim Luebbert went 23-8 1/4 and Roman Hutchinson had a best of 23-2 1/2.
Β
One of the day's biggest PRs came from sophomore Ava Washburn, who added six inches to her long jump best. She went 19-7 1/2. Washburn also was just off her triple jump PR, going 39-5 for 10th-place, and Rachel Bir went 39-2 1/2 to finish 13th overall.
Β
In the women's pole vault, while the Molls went 1-2, junior Avril Wilson matched her indoor PR with a make of 13-7 3/4 which puts her in the mix for NCAA Prelim qualification.
Β
In the men's vault, Scott Toney led the way with a clearance of 17-10 1/2. Mathis Bresko cleared 17-0 3/4 and Simon Park had his first competition of the outdoor season and made 16-6 3/4.
Β
Men's triple jump results were not fully finalized at midnight Saturday. They will be updated on Sunday.
Β
Leland Lieberg made 6-5 in the high jump on a third-attempt clearance.
Β
Sprints
Β
Leading the sprinters was senior Matthew Wilkinson, who shattered his three-year-old PR in the 400m hurdles. Wilkinson ran a time of 51.30 at the Pac-12 meet his freshman season and despite a couple strong seasons since, that had remained his personal-best. He blew past that tonight, winning his heat in 50.61 seconds, moving up to No. 7 in school history and into the top-30 nationally this season.
Β
Jonathan Frazier also returned to action after a long layoff coming back from injury. Frazier had a time of 52.87 to place 18th overall. Freshman Bodi Ligons suffered a fall over a hurdle.
Β
Senior Danielle Hunter had the fastest all-conditions 100-meters time of her career, going 11.57 seconds. That was just barely over the wind-aided limit at +2.1, or it would have ranked fifth in school history.
Β
In the women's 400m hurdles, freshman Mikayla Gardley was 34th at 1:03.42.
Β
Throws
Β
Sophomore Ashley Schroeder had broken into the Husky top-10 list in the javelin with a PR earlier this season, only to get knocked out when new Dawg Leonie Troeger threw a few feet farther a couple weeks later. But Schroeder climbed back into the top-10 today with another PR, throwing 160-1 to take third overall and move to No. 9 in school history. It's Schroeder's first toss beyond the 160-foot mark. Troeger today was sixth with a best of 154-11.
Β
Both Dawgs in the men's javelin launched PRs tonight as well. Jack Olsen went 218-6 on his second attempt, finishing seventh overall and breaking a two-year-old PR by two feet. And Carson Olmstead added three feet to his best with a throw of 211-8 to finish ninth.
Β
Kaia Tupu-South took third in the women's discus, going a season-best 172-1. Freshman Chiche Okemgbo had a PR of 135-9 and Yvonne Colson threw 131-6.
