COLLEGE STATION, Texas โ Senior pole vaulter Scott Toney was the first Husky ever to win a Big Ten title, getting the win at the indoor championships earlier this year. He got to go first again today, punching his ticket to Eugene for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a top-12 finish at NCAA West Preliminaries hosted by Texas A&M.
ย
On the first of the four-day competition, Toney became the first Husky to move on to nationals, while five more Huskies advanced from first rounds into Friday's quarterfinal sections. Tomorrow, the women's competition will get underway at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
ย
Toney, a grad transfer from Penn, had his season on the line today after two misses at 17-5 1/2. A third miss and he would have missed the cut, but Toney delivered the clutch make, and then he solidified his standing with a second-attempt make at 17-9 1/4. That was all that was needed to finish in the top-12, and the bar did not go up again.
ย
Senior vaulter Mathis Bresko was unable to extend his season, however, as he made the opening bar of 16-5 1/2 but did not go any higher today.
ย
ย
First on the track was the 1,500-meter first rounds. The four heats were all run mostly tactically, with only heat three going under 3:50. That heat featured freshman Martin Barco, and Barco took the win in 3:44.91 for the day's fastest time. In the fourth heat, Nathan Green safely secured a top-five finish in a time of 3:50.66 to advance. Ronan McMahon-Staggs and Rhys Hammond barely missed out on auto-qualifying, as McMahon-Staggs was sixth in his heat by just .07 seconds, and Hammond was seventh overall.
ย
Seniors Kyle Reinheimer and Justin O'Toole were both lined up in the same heat of the men's 800-meters, and the two produced a 1-3 finish to each move on to Friday. Reinheimer won the race in 1:47.32, and O'Toole was third in 1:48.32.
ย
ย
Freshman Bodi Ligons pushed through to the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles, while senior Matthew Wilkinson closed out his Husky career in round one. Running in the same heat, Ligons was fifth in 51.11 but that was good for one of the time qualifiers, while Wilkinson was eighth in 52.47. Ligons will look to go top-12 on Friday to make nationals.
ย
The fantastic Husky career of Prestin Artis finished up today as Artis came up a few spots shy of advancing to a second NCAA Outdoors. He finished 17th overall today with a best of 24-5 3/4. Artis won the 2024 Pac-12 title and was a First Team All-American indoors in 2024, and an honorable mention outdoors last year.
ย
The first event of the day for the Dawgs was the men's javelin. Big Ten scorer Carson Olmstead had a best throw of 206-9 to finish 31st overall, and Jack Olsen threw 186-3 for 45th.
ย
The night wrapped up with the 10,000-meters. Sophomore Tyrone Gorze led the way for UW. He was seeded just 37th coming in but finished 23rd in 29:05.33. Jamar Distel also improved his seeding by a good chunk, finishing 33rd after coming in ranked 45th. Evan Jenkins, the Big Ten Champ, had a 36th-place finish tonight.
