April 19, 2025 | Baseball
SEATTLE β The Huskies secured a fourth Big Ten series win on Saturday, defeating Illinois 4-3 at Husky Ballpark.
Β
Washington improves to 21-19 on the season and 11-6 in Big Ten play while Illinois falls to 21-15 and 9-8 in the conference.
Β
Despite allowing two home runs and collecting only six hits, the Diamond Dawgs found a way win, using strong pitching and defense to strand runners and hold on to the lead late in the game.
Β
Jackson Thomas kicked things off for the Huskies with a nine-pitch first inning, including a three-pitch strikeout of the third batter as he retired the side in order. At the end of the day, Thomas tossed 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs, and one walk against four strikeouts.
Β
Saturday was Thomas' fifth start this season going at least 5.0 innings and allowing two or less runs.
Β
The Huskies jumped ahead in the bottom of the first when Braeden Terry hit a two-RBI double, scoring Sam DeCarlo and Malakhi Knight. Then in the bottom of the fourth, Jackson Hotchkiss scores on a passed ball for the third Husky run.
Β
Illinois responded, tagging solo home runs in the fifth and seventh inning, the latter tying the game at three.
Β
After a clean inning of work from Josh Emanuels in the top of the eighth, the Dawgs punched back in the bottom. Bower used a bases loaded single to put Washington in front 4-3.
Β
Isaac Yeager came on in the ninth and immediately struck out the first batter. Then a double, a walk, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases, but Yeager didn't lose confidence.
He struck out the next batter before forcing the final batter into a groundout, collecting his sixth save of the season and his second of the series.
Β
Josh Emanuels earned the win, his first of the season.
Β
Offensively, six Huskies each recorded on hit. Terry led the team with two RBIs on the day.
Β
The Huskies will now look to earn a sweep against Illinois as the two teams are set for a game three matchup at 11:32 a.m. on Sunday.
