Washington Shuts Out Portland In Home Opener On Tuesday

SEATTLE – Washington started the home slate with a win on Tuesday afternoon, taking down Portland 3-0 at Husky Ballpark.
Washington improves to 5-8 on the year while Portland falls to 5-8 with the loss. The win is the first shutout for the Huskies this season.
The Dawgs used powerful pitching to earn the victory, starting with 3.0 shutout innings by Justin Tims. The freshman right-hander struck out three batters while allowing only one hit.
Neither team could get the offense rolling until the fifth inning, when Casen Taggart drove home Carson Crawford with a sacrifice fly. Trevor Kole added the second Husky run of the game immediately after, hitting a single to the left side to bring home AJ Guerrero from second.
Sam DeCarlo scored the third Washington run in the sixth inning when he hit a solo home run to left field. It was his second home run of the season and the first homer in Husky Ballpark in 2025.
Nic Bronzini, Jase Evangelista, and Bradley Gilbert pitched in relief to finish off the victory for Washington. Bronzini began the fourth inning before Evangelista came in.
The sophomore right-hander tossed 3.1 hitless innings, allowing only one walk. Bradley Gilbert pitched the eighth and ninth innings to earn the save, striking out three while allowing one hit and one walk.
AJ Guerrero led the Huskies with two hits, two walks, and one run scored. Casen Taggart, Trevor Kole, Jackson Hotchkiss, and Sam DeCarlo added the other four hits for the Huskies.
Defensively, the Washington pitchers combined to allow only three hits on the day while striking out seven batters.
The Huskies return to action on Friday, taking on Nebraska in the first Big Ten contest in program history. Washington will play a three-game series against the Huskers, with Friday's game set for 12:00 p.m. PT.
