March 08, 2025 | Baseball
LINCOLN, Neb. – Washington started Big Ten play with a bang on Saturday, taking both games in a doubleheader with Nebraska to clinch the first Big Ten series win in Husky Baseball history.
The Dawgs claim their fourth-straight win and improve to 7-8 and 2-0 in conference play while Nebraska drops to 4-8 and 0-2 in the Big Ten.
Washington began the day with a five-run first inning in the opening game on Saturday which helped the Huskies to an 11-5 victory. Braeden Terry was instrumental in getting the offense going in the first game, clocking his first home run of the season in the opening frame.
His three-run shot put Washington firmly in the driver seat before Nebraska had a chance to bat.
Three Husky doubles in the top of the fifth inning helped Washington put up another five spot and a 10-4 lead. One of those doubles came from Trevor Kole, who had four hits in five at bats in the first game, along with four RBIs.
Julian Sanders had a pinch-hit RBI double in the fifth, his second hit of the season and his first Washington double.
Peysen Sweeney earned the win in the first game after pitching 4.2 innings in relief of starter Reilly McAdams. Sweeney allowed one run and five hits while striking out five batters during his outing.
Isaac Yeager finished off game one, tossing one scoreless and hitless inning while striking out two batters.
In game two, Jackson Thomas made his second career start and immediately found himself in a pitching duel. He made quick work of the Nebraska side in the opening frame, striking out three batters.
He ultimately finished his day with 7.0 innings pitched, allowing four hits, two earned runs, and three walks while striking out six Cornhuskers. He earned the victory, moving to 2-0 in his Washington career.
In the bottom of the sixth, Nebraska got on the board first with a two-run shot. It didn't take the Huskies long to answer, however.
In the next inning with two runners on base, Malakhi Knight launched his third home run of the season deep to left field. Washington and Jackson Thomas held Nebraska scoreless in the seventh and then added the insurance runs in the eighth.
Three more runs scored, including a solo home run by Blake Wilson. It was the first home run of the season for the Husky second baseman.
Josh Emanuels entered the game in the eighth, and despite giving up a run, he held on to earn the win for Washington. He finished with 2.0 innings pitched, two hits, one earned run, and three strikeouts.
The Huskies will look to complete the sweep tomorrow, Sunday March 9 at 10 a.m. PT against Nebraska.
