Heat Sheets | 200/400 Heat Sheets | Final Meet Schedule | Accepted Entries | Meet Information SEATTLE – Twin sisters Amanda and Hana Moll celebrated their 20th birthday in style today, soaring into a tie for the top spot in the NCAA in the women's pole vault, as each of the twins vaulted over a matching career-high mark. For the first time, the sophomores from Olympia are twinning at the top of the collegiate ranks, making for the biggest highlight on day one of the UW Invitational.
Hana, the reigning NCAA Indoor Champion, and Amanda, who was top-five at NCAA Outdoors and the U.S. Olympic Trials, each cleared 15-feet, 3.50-inches on their second attempts today in the Dempsey Indoor. That broke the UW Invitational Meet Record, the Big Ten Indoor Conference Record, and ties both of them for the No. 4 spot in NCAA Indoor history. It also ties for the second-highest clearance in the world so far this year.
The twins had each made 15-3 at the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev. two weeks ago, but that meet was not sanctioned for NCAA qualification, so only now are the Molls officially on top of the collegiate rankings.
Transfer senior Scott Toney also soared into the Dempsey rafters, as he went 18-1 ¾ in the men's pole vault to go to No. 3 in UW history and climb to a tie for ninth in the NCAA this season. Junior Avril Wilson also had a career-best vault today, as she made 13-7 3/4 on a second attempt.
There were five more new top-10 marks posted by the Dawgs on the first of the two days of action in the Dempsey, along with a fantastic first day of the heptathlon from Jami Schlueter as he will chase a PR score on Saturday.
Sophomore Jonathan Frazier got a second-straight home win in the 60-meter hurdles, and dropped his PR down to 7.92 seconds in the win, moving up to No. 4 in school history.
The triple jumps saw the Huskies go four-for-four in indoor PRs. Trevontay Smith and Tim Luebbert wound up with just a centimeter separating their bests today, as both went over the 50-foot mark. Smith was second overall at 50-5 1/2 (15.38m) and Luebbert had a lifetime-best of 50-5 1/4 (15.37m) as the two are now fifth and sixth on the indoor top-10. Sophomore Roman Hutchinson also had a PR today of 48-5 1/4. On the women's side, Rachel Bir got her best career hop, skip, and jump, as she went 38-8 3/4.
Highlighting the distance events tonight were the 3,000-meter runs. In the top women's heat, Amina Maatoug made her Dempsey debut and improved upon her season-best with a runner-up finish in 9:00.44. She remains fourth in school history in that event. Julia David-Smith clocked an indoor PR of 9:07.11 to snag the No. 10 spot in school history.
In the men's 3k, Thom Diamond led a four-Dawg pack to the finish within less than two seconds of each other, all in career-best times. Diamond was second overall in 7:52.78. Sophomore Tyrone Gorze lowered his PR to 7:53.63, followed by Ben MacMillan, running unattached, but finishing in a strong 7:53.85. Also earning a new PR was Rhys Hammond, who went 7:54.33.
Senior Jami Schlueter showed midseason form in day one of his first heptathlon this season, as he was first in two events and second in two more, collecting PRs in three out of four events. Schlueter opened with a big 60-meter dash PR of 6.89 seconds, firing himself up right from the start. He set another PR in the long jump, going 24-0 1/4, his first 24-foot leap. He won the shot put with 47-5 3/4, an indoor best by more than a foot. And then he capped the day with another career-best in the high jump, going 6-4 1/4.
In the women's pentathlon, new Dawg Sofia Cosculluela topped the 4,000-point threshold that only two previous Huskies have reached, but she did so competing unattached. The Spanish champion scored 4,086 points which would rank No. 3 in school history if done in uniform. Sophomore Ava Washburn completed the first pentathlon of her career, scoring 3,446 points to finish eighth today.
