Smith & Blight Fall At Henley; UW Women's Four Up Next
July 04, 2024 | Men's Rowing
Washington's Ryan Smith and Ethan Blight fell to a Dutch pair in their opening-round race at the Royal Henley Regatta Thursday.
On Friday, the fourth day of the 185-year old regatta, a Washington women's four will race in the Town Challenge Cup.
Today, Smith and Blight, who topped a field of 12 crews who were required to race in qualifiers for the main draw (only the top-two of those 12 advanced) held the lead over Dutch rowers Isak Verkaik and Jasper Joordens for much of the race, passing both of the first two milestones on the 2,112-meter race course with the lead. However, in the final third of the race, the Netherlands pair moved in front and held on to finish a length and a half in front of the Huskies.
Washington's women's four – comprised of recently graduated Abby Adebiyi, Elena Coller-Hezel, Nikki Martincic, and Christiana Congdon, will make its Henley debut in a quarterfinal race vs. a crew from Leander Club, Thursday at 2:15 a.m. PT (10:15 a.m. GMT). Leander Club "A" beat another crew from the same club – Leander Club "B" – by a length and a half early in the program on Wednesday.
Also Friday, in the first Remenham Challenge Cup races of the regatta – in the top race category for women's eights – a U.S. crew (Princeton T.C. & Arion) coached by Washington women's head coach Yasmin Farooq, and including UW alumna Holly Drapp '21, will take on Leander Club & Bann R.C., at 10:15 a.m. PT (6:15 p.m. GMT).
Another two UW women's alumnae – Ella Cossill '22 and Angharad Broughton '23 – will row in a four for Molesey Boat Club (U.K.) in the Town Challenge Cup, at 3:05 a.m. PT (11:05 a.m. GMT), taking on a four from Spain.
Saturday, Washington's national champion men's eight will race in a semifinal in the Grand Challenge Cup, facing the winner of a Friday race between Rowing Canada and a U.S. Under-23 crew. The time for the UW's Grand Challenge semifinal will be announced after Friday's racing is complete.
