Diamond Dawgs Swept At Cal
May 18, 2024 | Baseball
BERKELEY, Calif. – For the second day in a row, Washington was walked off at Stu Gordon Stadium as Cal completed a series sweep with a 4-3 win in 10 innngs.
On a pitch count, UW starter Calvin Kirchoff gave the Dawgs three scoreless innings. Sawyer Parkin received the loss, allowing one run over 2.1 frames.
Kirchoff evaded an early deficit in the third as Cal put runners at the corners with no outs before the senior worked out of danger to keep the game scoreless.
That scoreless tie lasted until the seventh, when Cam Clayton cranked a leadoff bomb to left-center, giving the Dawgs a 1-0 lead.
However, Cal responded with a leadoff home run of its own in the bottom half. The Bears went on to take the lead on a bases loaded walk before Gianluca Shinn induced a pop up and grounder to keep the deficit at a single run.
Cal added a run of insurance in the eighth but Clayton kept the Huskies alive with his second big fly of the day, crushing a two-run shot to left-center to buy UW bonus baseball.
But the Golden Bears would have the final say, winning the game on an RBI single in the 10th.
Washington and Cal will square off once again in both team's Pac-12 Tournament opener on Tuesday in Scottsdale, Arizona. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.
