Washington Walked Off In Extras At Cal, 6-5
May 17, 2024 | Baseball
BERKELEY, Calif. – Washington jumped out to a five-run lead over Cal Friday but couldn't hold it, falling in extras, 6-5, at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Despite the loss, Washington clinched the ninth and final seed at the 2024 Pac-12 Tournament thanks to Oregon's 8-4 win over Washington State.
Grant Cunningham was tagged with the loss, allowing one run over two-plus innings of relief. UW starter Jared Engman was effective in his return from injury, allowing two runs on two hits over 3.1 innings, striking out five.
A pitcher's duel through the early frames, the game came to life in the fourth as the first six batter's of the frame reached for UW.
AJ Guerrero led off with a single before Cam Clayton clobbered a two-run shot over the well in left. Jeter Ybarra followed with an infield single, scoring shortly thereafter on Carson Ohland's RBI double snuck just inside the third base bag.
One pitch later, Sam DeCarlo yanked a double of his own down the left line, plating Ohland. Braeden Terry capped scoring in the inning, beating the shift with a single through the vacant hole between third and short to score DeCarlo.
Cal responded with two of their own in the fourth. The Golden Bears cut then cut the lead to two in the fifth with a solo shot to left.
Reilly McAdams came on in the fourth and largely held the Cal bats at bay but in the eighth inning a two-run home run tied the game at five runs apiece.
Jason Kelly turned to Grant Cunningham in the ninth to extend the game into extras, with the sophomore getting a massive strikeout to leave the bases loaded for free baseball.
The righty fanned a pair in the 10th to send the things into the 11th before a leadoff home run gave the Golden Bears the walk off winner to clinch the series.
The two sides will square off Friday in Game Two at 6 p.m. PT. The game will air live on Pac-12 Bay Area.
