Dawgs Win Wild West Shootout Over Utah, 13-8
April 20, 2024 | Baseball
Despite receiving a no decision, starter Calvin Kirchoff delivered an absolute gem. The senior scattered eight hits over a career-high tying 6.2, allowing a single run. Grant Cunningham got the win out of the bullpen, surrendering two unearned runs.
After going down 1-2-3 in the first, the first four batters of the second reached for UW as the Huskies struck for three runs.
Carson Ohland got scoring for the night started, dropping a single into right to bring in Jeter Ybarra. Colin Blanchard and Sam DeCarlo followed with sacrifice flies, tacking on two more.
Utah threatened to answer right back, loading the bases with one out in their half, but Kirchoff and company escaped, preserving the three-run lead.
It appeared as though a 4-6-3 double play had snuffed out a Husky scoring opportunity in the fifth but after a challenge by head coach Jason Kelly, the throw to second was ruled to pull Utah shortstop Core Jackson off the bag, allowing Aiva Arquette's run to count and extending the inning.
Cam Clayton followed with a single up the middle, bringing home Braeden Terry and AJ Guerrero and extending the lead to 6-0.
Terry got in on the RBI action in the sixth, shooting a single up the middle to make it a touchdown lead. However, Utah responded for the first time on the night, breaking up the shutout on Jackson's RBI ground ball.
Aiva Arquette's RBI double in the eighth restored the seven-run lead but the game quickly turned in the bottom half of the inning.
A three-run home run gave Utah new life and eventually a dropped fly ball in center on what would have been the third out completed the rally for the Utes, tying the game at eight runs apiece.
With momentum firmly on the Utes' side, the Dawgs responded with a big inning of their own.
Ybarra led off with a single and came around to score and put Washington back ahead on Cooper Whitton's single to right. Colin Blanchard and Sam DeCarlo followed with RBI singles of their own and Blake Wilson plated them both with a single to left, putting the Huskies up by five.
Cunningham collected the final three outs in the bottom half, setting up a Sunday night showdown for the series.
Sunday's game is scheduled for 6 p.m. PT and will be aired on the Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Mountain and Pac-12 Mountain.
