STANFORD, Calif. – Day one, and night one, of the outdoor track season saw nearly fifteen hours of action from beginning to end for the Husky track team at the Stanford Invitational. And it was the longest event on the track, the 10,000-meters, that provided one huge highlight to cap things off. Redshirt freshman Evan Jenkins took the victory in the top heat of the men's 10k, smashing the UW School Record in his official Husky outdoor debut.
Jenkins, a product of Camas, Wash., enjoyed an excellent indoor season where he ran on the 9th-place DMR at NCAA Indoors, but tonight was a breakout performance on another level. Running at the back of a lead pack of over a dozen men, Jenkins suddenly moved up and took the lead with over two laps to go, and he held off a final one-on-one sprint challenge from Gonzaga's Wil Smith to get the win in 28:04.58.
That time breaks Kieran Lumb's 2022 school record by seven seconds, and is the fastest qualifying time in the NCAA so far this season.
Not far behind was true freshman Tyrone Gorze, running his first track race of any kind in the Husky singlet. Gorze, the Central Point, Ore. native, ran 28:22.63, shooting him up to No. 4 in school history, less than a second behind 2023 Pac-12 Champion Brian Fay's best collegiate time.
Here are more of the many highlights from Friday's action.
Sprints
Danielle Hunter ran into a severe -3.4 headwind in her 100-meters heat, crossing in 12.17 seconds. Later she was back on the very damp track and clocked 24.15 to take fifth in the 200-meters, just off the Husky top-10 list in that event.
Kapiolani Coleman notched a 14.38-second season opener in the 100-meter hurdles and she also doubled back in the 400m hurdles, going 1:01.72. Anna Terrell was seventh in the 400m hurdles in 1:01.01.
The men's hurdle crew shined despite the gray. Jonathan Birchman was the 400m hurdles champion and he went to No. 4 in the NCAA this season with a time of 50.61. Matthew Wilkinson was third overall in 52.35. Then the freshman duo of Jonathan Frazier and Boden Hanley had excellent debuts running 52.73 (Frazier) and 52.84 (Hanley).
In the 110m hurdles, Jami Schlueter posted a 14.85 while Frazier crossed in 14.94.
Daniel Gaik placed 12th overall in the 400-meters in 48.29.
Distances
The Dawgs had several outstanding runs in spite of persistent downpours during the 1,500m races today. The women were led by Chloe Foerster, as the indoor mile record-breaker took four seconds off her 1,500-meters best with a time of 4:12.66, which puts her up to No. 6 in school history. Indoor 800-meter All-American Wilma Nielsen also clocked a quick time of 4:16.72. And Samantha Friborg ran a huge 10-second PR of 4:19.43 to win her heat easily, by more than two seconds.
The men were led by defending NCAA 1,500m champ Nathan Green, who did most of the work pulling the field through the final lap, though he got edged right at the line to take second overall today in 3:40.18, the third-fastest time so far in the country. Freshman Thom Diamond made his official collegiate debut and he posted a 3:45.52.
Two-time 10k First Team All-American Haley Herberg opened up at the distance tonight and turned in another in a long list of sub-33-minute efforts. Herberg was the sixth-fastest collegiate tonight, going 32:51.60. As the clock neared midnight, Saskia Lloyd finished her first 10k as a Husky, going 34:51.29.
Leo Daschbach kept his roll going from the indoor season, as he shattered his 5,000-meters PR by more than half a minute tonight. Daschbach had a 14:13 collegiate best coming in but tonight he dropped a 13:40.06 to go to No. 6 in school history. James Crabtree also ran his first collegiate 5,000-meters this morning, putting up a time of 14:04.31 and Jamar Distel opened up with a time of 14:13.00.
In the women's 5k, Julia David-Smith raced the distance for the first time on the track and broke 16-minutes in her debut. She posted a 15:57.24 time. India Weir ran 16:25.29 and Ella Borsheim clocked a 16:26.29.
All-American and former 1,500m national champ Joe Waskom sharpened his skills in the steeplechase in his outdoor opener. He ran 8:54.66 while Sam Affolder posted his fastest steeple time in two years, going 8:49.71.
Jumps
In long jump action, freshman Roman Hutchinson went 21-feet, 9-inches for the men, and for the women, freshman Ava Washburn had a best of 18-1 ½.
Throws
The long-awaited season debut came for the men's javelin throwers today. First up, Brice Crider made his Husky debut with a toss of 195-2. Then in the invitational section Chandler Ault took second overall with an impressive opener of 223-10, and fellow Pac-12 scorer Jack Olsen opened up with a mark of 206-9.
