Huskies Tally Sweet 16 Bids To NCAA Indoors
February 27, 2024 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – The Husky men's and women's track teams have combined for a 'sweet' sixteen entries for next week's NCAA Indoor Championships, the culmination of the indoor track and field season which will be held in Boston. The TRACK at New Balance will be the venue where the Huskies will chase championships and All-America honors from Mar. 7-9.
Live championship coverage will be streamed on ESPN+ on Friday, March 8 starting at 9:30 a.m. Eastern and Saturday, March 9 starting at 11:30 a.m. Eastern. There will be a re-air of the championships at 9 p.m. Eastern on Monday, March 11 on ESPNU.
The fifth-ranked Husky men's team has 10 entries to the championships (nine individuals plus one relay), and the eighth-ranked women's team will have six entries (five individuals plus one relay).
Both teams have No. 1-seeds as Luke Houser is ranked No. 1 and is the defending champion in the mile run for the men, and freshman Hana Moll is the No. 1 seed in the women's pole vault. The UW women are also No. 1 in the DMR, though their relay order could end up quite different than the one that set the record two weeks ago.
Women's entries feature both Carley Thomas and Wilma Nielsen in the 800-meters, both making a return trip to nationals, though Nielsen was running for Bradley one year ago. Thomas is seeded fifth and Nielsen 13th. Sophomore Chloe Foerster is the No. 4 seed in the mile after setting the School Record this year at 4:28.14. Along with Moll in the pole vault, senior Nastassja Campbell will chase another podium finish. Campbell was sixth indoors last year and second outdoors.
The men have five entries on the track and five in the field. Along with Houser in the mile, Joe Waskom is ranked sixth, after he was fourth a year ago in the final in Albuquerque. Nathan Green, a mile finalist last year as well and the NCAA 1,500m Champion outdoors, opted to focus on the 800-meters this year. Green just broke the 800-meter school record this past weekend in the Dempsey, and he is seeded second nationally. The men's DMR is in after running the third-fastest time in the NCAA this year.
In the field, Prestin Artis makes his NCAA Championships debut in the long jump, as he qualified 14th overall at 25-10. Mathis Bresko and Max Manson make their first nationals in their first seasons as Huskies and teammates, as both of them cleared 18-1 ¼ to tie for 12th. Bruno Comin Pescador will look to improve on last year's eighth-place finish in the heptathlon in his second NCAA appearance.
Jayden White will be the first Husky in action as the weight throw has been moved to Thursday, Mar. 7. White finished fifth last year and fourth the year before that, and he comes in ranked third in the NCAA this year.
