SEATTLE – One last challenge stands between the nation's top track athletes and the goal of making the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and that is this week's NCAA Preliminary Championships, with the West Prelims taking place in Fayetteville, Arkansas. All athletes in Arkansas are aiming for top-12 finishes in their events to advance on to the NCAA final site in Eugene, Ore.
Washington has 36 entries for the four-day competition that runs this Wednesday through Saturday, May 27-30. Those who make the top-12 will move on to Hayward Field for the semis and finals from June 10-13.
To reach this stage of the season, athletes had to rank in the top-48 in their event among all the teams in the west or east half of the country. Simultaneously this week, the NCAA East Prelims will go in Lexington, Ky.
The West Prelim schedule alternates days between men's and women's events, with the men starting things off on Wednesday, then the women getting going on Thursday. All the track action takes place in the late afternoon and into the evening. The first UW field competitors will start at 12 p.m. PT from Wednesday-Friday, while the first UW field event Saturday will be the men's triple jump at 4 p.m. PT, which comes after the first potential track event on Saturday, scheduled for 3:15 p.m. PT.
UW already has two qualifiers secured for Eugene, as the multi-events advance straight to NCAAs based on season-best scores. Sofia Cosculluela is bound for her second NCAAs in the heptathlon and Teko Cates has made his first NCAAs in the decathlon. However, Cosculluela and Cates will both compete in singles events in Fayetteville, with Cosculluela running the 100m hurdles, and Cates going in the high jump.
The 17th-ranked UW women have 21 entries and the men have 15.
Every track event in Fayetteville from the 100-meters up to the 1,500-meters will have two rounds; a first round that cuts the field from 48 to 24, and a quarterfinal that takes it from 24 down to the advancing 12. Longer races—the 3,000m steeplechase, 5,000-meters, and 10,000-meters—have just one round in Fayetteville to go from 48 down to 12.
In the throws and horizontal jumps, all 48 athletes will simply have three attempts each to decide the advancing 12. Vertical jumps will continue to raise the bars until a top-12 is decided.
