Clayton Goes Yard Twice To Lead Dawgs To 11-4 Win
February 24, 2024 | Baseball
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Washington's bats exploded Saturday night at Whataburger Field as the Huskies picked up their first win of the season, defeating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 11-4 on Day 2 of the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
Sam Boyle picked up the win in relief, allowing a single run one hit and one walk, striking out three over 3.2 innings.
With the Husky offense in desperate need of a spark, Cam Clayton lit the powder keg, hammering a leadoff bomb to put Washington up 1-0 from the get go.
The Islanders responded with a run in the home half to even the score. However, Blake Wilson came through with an RBI grounder in the second, regaining the advantage for the Dawgs.
Two innings later, Sam DeCarlo got off the schneid in a big way, clobbering a two-run homer for his first hit of the season, pushing the UW lead to 4-1.
AJ Guerrero came home on a throwing error in the fifth to tack on another run, but a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning cut the lead in half at 5-3.
In the sixth, Clayton gave the Dawgs some distance. Sitting on a 1-0 count, the Husky shortstop tattooed an inside pitch and sent it over the left field wall, a three-run shot to make it 8-3.
A solo home run pulled the Islanders back a run closer in the eighth but DeCarlo got it right back with a sharp RBI single in the ninth and back-to-back bases-loaded walks expanded the lead to 11-4, closing out scoring for the night.
Washington will conclude its Lone Star State stay Sunday morning, taking on Maryland at 9 a.m. PT. The game will stream live on FloBaseball, with links to live coverage available at GoHuskies.com.
