Wilson’s Three-Run Yack Leads Dawgs To Dramatic Comeback Versus Maryland
February 25, 2024 | Baseball
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – With just four outs standing between Washington (2-3-1) and defeat, true freshman Blake Wilson turned things around, tanking a three-run blast as the Huskies topped Maryland (5-2) 6-5 at the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
Gianluca Shinn came out of the bullpen to get the win, tossing a pair of shutout innings.
The Huskies took a brief lead in the first frame when Aiva Arquette brought home AJ Guerrero with a ground ball. However, a bases-clearing double in the second put the Terps in front 3-1 shortly thereafter.
The Dawgs battled back to tie things up on a pair of towering solo shots, Arquette in the fourth and Michael Brown in the sixth.
A two-run single in the seventh put momentum back on the Terps' side but a two-out rally in the eighth would give the Dawgs the final say.
Colton Bower and Carson Ohland drew back-to-back walks to bring Wilson to the plate. The California native took an almighty hack at Evan Smith's 1-1 offering and clubbed it over the fence in left.
Maryland moved the tying run to third in the ninth but Shinn slammed the door, fanning Sam Hojnar to secure the win.
The Huskies will make their triumphant return home next weekend, hosting Santa Clara in a three-game series at Husky Ballpark. all three games will be streamed on Washington Live Stream 2, with links to live coverage available at GoHuskies.com.
