SEATTLE – Jayden White and Beatrice Asomaning each closed out their Dempsey seasons on record-setting notes in the men's and women's weight throws, while Nathan Green zoomed up another national list, up to No. 2 in the 800-meters, as those three School Records thrilled the crowds at the Ken Shannon Last Chance Meet.
The fifth-ranked Husky men and sixth-ranked Husky women have one more day of action in their home building tomorrow before the top-16 individual fields solidify for the NCAA Championships.
White, a two-time First Team All-American in the weight throw, did not make his season debut until the Husky Classic two weeks ago, but he came right out and broke his own School Record at that meet. Today, White found a new record to break, as he launched the farthest weight throw in the 20+ year history of the Dempsey, going 77-10 ¼.
It was a major PR of more than three feet, and puts White at No. 2 in the NCAA this season, and 19th in NCAA history in the event. The mark broke the longstanding Dempsey Record of 77-5 ¼ set by Conor McCullough in 2015, a U.S. Olympian in 2016.
Asomaning broke her own women's weight throw record on her sixth and final attempt of the competition, and therefore likely the senior's last throw in the building in a Husky jersey. She added nearly a foot to her career-best, going 71-0 ½. Asomaning came into the day ranked 17th, looking to make the top-16 for NCAA qualification, and the PR may still leave her just short, but walking off with a final PR and School Record leaves much to celebrate. Asomaning will have to wait and see if any spots open up ahead of her when declarations are made next week.
Green, the 2023 Pac-12 and NCAA Champion at 1,500-meters, dropped down to 800-meters tonight and powered to a School Record time of 1:46.50. That stands as the second-fastest time in the NCAA this season. Green also ran the 800-meter leg on UW's distance medley relay last week as it punched its ticket to nationals with an American Indoor Record. He also is almost a certainty to qualify for nationals in the mile, where he ranks eighth in 3:53.74. Rarely would anyone enter in both the 800m and the mile, so Green now has options of where to focus his talents at NCAAs in Boston.
The Ken Shannon Last Chance Meet resumes at 10 a.m. on Saturday and will be wrapping up around 2 p.m.
Sprints
Freshman Jonathan Frazier made the 60-meter hurdles final and closed his first indoor season with a PR in the final, running 8.11 seconds to finish sixth overall.
Danielle Hunter tied her PR in the 60-meter dash in 7.55 seconds and Sophia McHenry lowered her personal-best down to 7.90. Both came back in the 200-meters, with Hunter going 24.81 and Henry 26.04.
Distances
Along with Green's record run in the 800-meters, Joe Waskom turned in another quick mile time of 3:56.94 in the invite section of the men's mile as he looks to fine tune for nationals.
Freshman Thom Diamond was impressive, competing unattached in the 3,000-meters, as he pulled away to win his heat in a PR of 7:59.86.
In the women's 3,000-meters Julia David-Smith and India Weir each posted PRs. David-Smith cut 10 seconds off her previous best, going 9:13.16, and Weir dropped a second from her old mark, running 9:16.96. Josephine Welin (9:28.95) and Naomi Smith (9:59.51) rounded out the event for the Dawgs.
Haley Herberg took another shot at lowering her own 5k School Record but a blistering, Dempsey Record pace was tough to hold tonight and she came across in 15:51.12, not an improvement on her season-best mark.
Jumps
The women's pole vault contained plenty of drama with a loaded field including the No. 1-ranked event squad in the nation: the Huskies. Freshman Hana Moll got a third-attempt make at 14-4 ½ and then a first-attempt clearance of 14-8 ¼ to secure a win, then taking attempts up at 15-3 but not quite connecting.
Nastassja Campbell strengthened her NCAA bid by getting a season-best by a half-inch, as she made 14-4 ½ to try and move off the bubble. Amanda Moll cleared 13-11 ¾ and Sara Borton made 13-7, not improvements on their season-bests, so they'll remain firmly on the proverbial bubble for Boston. Avril Wilson and Sarah Ferguson each made 12-9 ½ today.
Mathis Bresko and Max Manson went 2-3 in the men's pole vault, clearing the same height of 17-7 ¾, with Simon Park finishing fifth at 17-1 ¾. Bresko and Manson will hope that their season-bests of 18-1 ¼ hold up in the top-16 to get them their first NCAA Indoor bids.
Throws
Aside from the record launches from White and Asomaning, the only other Husky thrower in action was Yvonne Colson in the women's weight, where she was seventh overall with a best today of 53-11 ¼.
Multis
Jami Schlueter had a very strong day one in the heptathlon, and he sits in second place with 3,150 points heading into the final three events on Saturday.
Schlueter opened with a big season-best and just .01 off his career-best in the 60-meter dash, running 7.05 seconds. He then had a career-best long jump of 23-8 ¾. Movign to the shot put, Schlueter went 44-11 ¾, and he had a season-best high jump of 6-2 ¼ to cap off the day.
