Walk Off Homer Sinks Huskies Versus Pitt

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Washington baseball team battled back twice in Friday's afternoon tilt with Pitt at the Kleberg Bank College Classic but ultimately came up short as the Panthers walked off with a 3-2 win at Whataburger Field.

Grant Cunningham wore the loss, allowing one run in his 2.1 innings of relief work. Starter Jared Engman received a no-decision, exiting after 5.0 frames.

After Pitt (4-0) pushed in front in the third via a solo home run, the Huskies (0-3-1) evened the score in the fifth. Carson Ohland went to the opposite field gap for a double, UW's first hit of the game, and Colin Blanchard followed with a sharp single to plate the freshman.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of sixth regained the lead for the Panthers, but the Dawgs again had a response.

It was Ohland and Blanchard getting things started once again, leading off with back-to-back singles. Cam Clayton then brought home Ohland, lifting a sacrifice fly to right, evening things back up at two runs apiece.

The Panthers nearly recaptured the advantage in the eighth with a two-out rally. However, a perfect relay from AJ Guerrero to Clayton to Colton Bower cut down the leading run at the dish, retiring the side.

However, after the Huskies were retired in order in the ninth, Ryan Zuckerman hit a walk-off blast to left in Pitt's half to win it for the Panthers.

Washington returns to Whataburger Field on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT, taking on host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The game will stream live on FloBaseball, with links to live coverage available at GoHuskies.com.
