Lead Slips Late As Washington Falls 3-2 At Long Beach State
February 17, 2024 | Baseball
LONG BEACH, Calif. βΒ Washington (0-2) took an early lead and held it for most of the night at Blair Field on Saturday but a late charge from Long Beach State (2-0) nipped the Huskies in the end, falling 3-2.
Β
Calvin Kirchoff put together a strong outing despite receiving a no-decision, allowing one run on two hits over 5.0 frames. Sam Boyle received the loss in relief, surrendering two runs over 2.2 innings.
Β
Just like in game one, the Huskies got off to a fast start. Cam Clayton drew a leadoff walk and came home on AJ Guerrero's sacrifice fly. Later in the frame, Colton Bower drew a bases loaded walk to push across another run and put UW up a pair after a half inning.
Β
Long Beach answered with a run in the home half but from there the two sides were locked in a pitcher's duel.
Β
A one-out double put the Dirtbags in a position to score in the seventh but Boyle got Adrian Lopez to chase a high fastball to escape the threat.
Β
However, back-to-back HBPs from Boyle came back to bite the Huskies in the eighth as a two-run double cleared the bases and put UW behind for the first time on the night at 3-2.
Β
Josh Emanuels was able to get out of the inning without any further damage but the Huskies were unable to return fire in the ninth, dropping the game and handing LBSU the series.
Β
The Huskies will look to salvage a win in Sunday's getaway day, taking on the Dirtbags at 1 p.m. PT. The game will be streamed on ESPN+, with links to live stats available at GoHuskies.com.
Β
DAWG BITES
β’ AJ Guerrero extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a leadoff single in the third. Guerrero finished 2-for-3 on the night, the lone Husky with multiple knocks.
