Washington Drops Season Opener To Long Beach State

Jeter Ybarra put together a 3-for-4 night at the plate to pace the Dawgs offensively, coming a triple shy of the cycle and crossing the plate three times.

Jared Engman received the loss, surrendering five earned runs over 3.1 innings. Grant Cunningham gave 3.1 innings of relief, allowing a pair of runs on two hits with three strikeouts.

Washington got off on the right foot, drawing three consecutive walks in the opening frame before Mike Brown dropped a two-run single into left-center.

Long Beach responded in the home half, capitalizing on a throwing error to scratch three across and take the lead at 3-0.

The Dawgs tied things up in the third as Carson Ohland drew a walk with nowhere to put him, deadlocking the score at three runs apiece. However, LBSU struck back for a run in the bottom half to regain the advantage.

The Dirtbags added a run in the fourth, ending Engman's night, but Cunningham escaped a bases-loaded jam to keep things tight.

The Huskies hung in until the seventh, when LBSU brought home five runs to extend its lead to 10-3.

A Cam Clayton RBI groundout got a run back in the eighth and Ybarra launched a solo homer to dead center in the ninth but it wasn't enough as the Dirtbags took the season opener.
