Osobor Named To Lute Olson Award Early Season Watch List
November 22, 2024 | Men's Basketball
BOSTON – Adding another national player of the year prognostication to his growing list, Washington big man Great Osobor has been named to the Lute Olson Award Early Season Watch List.
The award is presented annually to the top player in division I college basketball.
The award is named in honor of Hall of Fame coach Lute Olson, who won 776 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997.
The British international was also tabbed to the Wooden Award Watch List earlier in November, recognizing the most outstanding player in college basketball. Additionally, Osobor reeled in Preseason All-Big Ten and Karl Malone Award Power Forward of the Year Watchlist honors.
Osobor was also named a Preseason All-American by ESPN's Jay Bilas and CBS' Jon Rothstein, and was tabbed the No. 15 player in the nation by CBS.
Through four games in Purple and Gold, Osobor has lived up to his high billing, leading the nation in rebounds per game and ranking second national in steals per game. The Husky forward has led UW in points, rebounds and steals in three of Washington's four games so far.
The Montana State and Utah State transfer made a dynamic debut in UW's season-opening win over UC Davis. In addition to scoring 15 points, Osobor pitched in career-highs with 17 rebounds and six steals.
Stuffing the box score, Osobor became the first major college basketball player to post that single-game stat line since Blake Griffin in 2008. It was also the first time in UW history that a player tallied at least 15 points, 15 rebounds and five steals in a game.
The Bradford, England, native is also one of just four players 6-8 or taller from a Power 6 conference over the past 20 seasons to post multiple games with six or more steals, needing just four games to join the likes of Corey Brewer, Marcus Dove and Tyler Zeller.
Osobor and the Huskies continue the season on Friday night, hosting Alcorn State for a 7 p.m. PT tip at Alaska Airlines Arena. The game will be available for streaming on B1G+.
