UW Wins Penalty Shootout, Advances Past No. 17 Iowa Into Big Ten Tournament Semis
November 02, 2024 | Women's Soccer
MINNEAPOLIS – Mia Hamant made three penalty saves as Washington advanced via shootout victory over No. 17 Iowa at the Big Ten Tournament Saturday night at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
The penalty win earns the Huskies a semifinal date next week at CITYPARK in St. Louis. UW will face the winner of Monday's matchup between UCLA and Penn State.
While shots in the first half were seven apiece, the Huskies generated the majority of the quality looks at goal.
One of the best chances of the opening 45 came less than three minutes in as Ioanna Papatheodorou's header from the center of the 18 was saved in the bottom corner.
The Dawgs continued to press on in search of the opener, drawing a foul just outside the 18 in the 30th minute. Papatheodorou's ensuing free kick was low against the wall, with Kolo Suliafu following with a powerful shot dragged just wide.
While UW enjoyed the majority of the attack, Hamant stood tall when called up, making a point blank save on a header in the 37th minute.
With the match scoreless heading into the break, Washington jumped back onto the attack, once again nearly breaking through early on a header. However, Suliafu's effort was cleared off the line to deny the Huskies.
A few minutes later, it was Hamant making a save off the line to keep the match scoreless, stopping Meike Ingles rocket from the right side of the box before collecting Sofia Bush's follow up from distance.
With still nothing separating the two sides after 90 minutes, the match was extended into overtime and eventually penalties.
With the shootout score sitting at 4-4, the Hawkeyes had the winning penalty on their foot in the sixth round. However, Hamant dove to her left and parried Barit Parten's shot to keep the Dawgs alive.
The ball was then passed to true freshman Alex Buck, who stayed cool beyond her years and blasted her penalty into the upper 90 to put the pressure back on Iowa.
With the match on her shoulders, Hamant stepped up, swatting Miah Schueller's effort. With her hands raised high into the Minneapolis night, Hamant's teammates mobbed her inside the 18.
