SEATTLE – The Dawgs are bringing the Pack to the Big Ten this Friday morning. Washington's women's and men's cross country teams will line up for the first time in their new conference home, racing for the Big Ten Championship just outside of Champaign, Illinois, in Savoy.
Big Ten Network will televise the races live with the women's race starting at 8:35 a.m. Pacific and the men going at 9:35 a.m. Pacific.
The University of Illinois is hosting the meet at the Orange and Blue Golf Course in Savoy, Illinois. It will certainly be the largest field UW has ever raced in for a conference crown, as there are 18 women's teams and 15 men's teams set to lineup on Friday morning.
UW comes into the race as one of the top teams to watch in both races. The Huskies are the highest ranked Big Ten women's team at No. 2 nationally. They are joined in the national polls by No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 17 Oregon, No. 22 Minnesota, No. 24 Penn State, and No. 26 Michigan State.
The Husky men's team is ranked No. 18 nationally, and that is second among Big Ten teams coming in, as No. 9 Wisconsin leads the way. Oregon is also ranked 25th while Michigan and Michigan State are the first two teams just outside the top-30 in the receiving votes category.
A dozen Dawgs are traveling on each side. The men's group is made up of Isaac Briggs, James Crabtree, Leo Daschbach, Thom Diamond, Jamar Distel, Tyrone Gorze, Nathan Green, Rhys Hammond, Evan Jenkins, Ben MacMillan, Ronan McMahon-Staggs, and Nathan Neil.
The women headed to Champaign are Ella Borsheim, Julia David-Smith, Stephanie Driscoll, Chloe Foerster, Saskia Lloyd, Sophie O'Sullivan, Amina Maatoug, Maeve Stiles, Sam Tran, India Weir, Josephine Welin, and Claire Yerby.
The Husky women's team, Pac-12 Champions a year ago and 8th at the 2023 NCAA Championships, have steadily moved up the rankings this fall from a preseason No. 5 up to the No. 2 spot, their highest since 2016. Washington has used impressive depth moreso than a single low stick to win the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational and then take runner-up at Pre-Nationals.
At the Nuttycombe, transfer Maeve Stiles led the Dawgs in eighth-place as UW had it's top-five scorers all in the top-40. Against a Pre-Nationals field that had all of the top-five teams at the time of the race, UW had six women finish in the top-51 all within 25 seconds of each other, with Chloe Foerster leading in 16th-place.
The UW men's team was the Pac-12 runner-up last year but is looking to get back to NCAAs after having a five-year run snapped last season. The Huskies took a big step towards that NCAA qualifying goal in their first run of the season at the Nuttycombe, as the Dawgs placed fifth overall. Tyrone Gorze and Leo Daschbach finished side by side in 27th and 28th to lead the men and UW had all its scorers in the top-80.
The Wisconsin Invite effort moved the men up to No. 13 nationally. Next time out at the Pre-Nationals, the Huskies ran a lineup featuring more of their young runners, with five of their top-seven from Nuttycombe not racing (Gorze, Daschbach, Nathan Green, Evan Jenkins, Jamar Distel). The Huskies finished 24th without most of their top runners, with Ronan McMahon-Staggs stepping up to lead the squad for the first time in 82nd-place.
