Hustle And Grit Give Washington 2-0 Win At Nebraska
October 20, 2024 | Women's Soccer
LINCOLN, Neb. – Putting forth a relentless defensive effort and capitalizing on its chances near the goal, Washington earned three points on the road at Nebraska Sunday, topping the Cornhuskers 2-0 at Hibner Stadium.
Nebraska outshot Washington 25-9 on the day. However, the stout Husky defense forced many attempts from range, surrendering just seven shots on goal, all saved by UW keeper Mia Hamant to set a new career-high.
Continuing to pile up goals, Ioanna Papatheodorou got the Huskies on the board in the 7th minute, hunting down Kelsey Branson's knock-down header and slotting a shot past Husker keeper Cece Villa.
From there, the Dawgs fought a ferocious attack from the Cornhusker offense, fending off 14 first half shots, including three Hamant saves.
The Huskers again came out the aggressors in the second half but it was Washington that struck on the counter attack.
After Jadyn Holdenried's near full-field counter press forced an errant pass from Villa, Alex Buck picked off the ball and hit it first time, bulging the back of the net for her first career goal and the dagger to give Washington three massive road points in the Big Ten table.
Buck's blazing speed continued to cause problems for the Huskers and in the 88th minute the freshman drew a handball outside the 18 from Villa, who was shown red to drop Nebraska down to 10 players for the final two-plus minutes.
Washington returns home next Sunday to cap the regular season, facing Oregon on Senior Day at Husky Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. PT, streaming live on B1G+.
