Huskies Fall In Four At Arizona State
September 24, 2023 | Volleyball
TEMPE, Ariz. – The Dawgs saw the team they can be at the start of today's Pac-12 road match at Arizona State, clicking on offense and defense to take the first set. But from there, UW struggled in the serve-and-pass game and the undefeated Sun Devils controlled the next three sets to take a 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-16 win at Mullett Arena.
Washington falls to 9-4 on the year and is 0-2 on its challenging four-match road stretch to open Pac-12 play. Arizona State improved to 14-0 and 2-0.
The Huskies hit .429 in the first set and held ASU to a .129 mark led by seven early kills from Arizona native Kierstyn Barton to take the one set lead. But Washington fell into early holes in the next three sets, and couldn't find its usual serving supremacy. The Huskies had not been out-aced by an opponent all year, but did not earn an ace today, while ASU served five. The Huskies also missed 14 serves today.
While Barton led the team with 11 kills, fellow freshman Katy Wessels had a breakthrough offensive effort with eight kills on 14 swings and just one error to hit .500. Audra Wilmes had 10 kills and May Pertofsky added eight with 11 digs and four blocks. Molly Wilson had 38 assists and 14 digs.
The Huskies hit .221 for the match but ASU got up to .303 after its slow start.
UP NEXT: Washington continues on a tough road as it visits No. 6 Oregon next Friday, Sept. 29, at 6 p.m., followed by a trip to Oregon State next Sunday.
