December 09, 2025 | Volleyball
SEATTLE -- Washington's two primary outside pin hitters, Simona Mateska and Kierstyn Barton, were each named to the AVCA Northwest All-Region Team on Tuesday, making them eligible for AVCA All-America honors. Barton was named to the first team while Mateska picked up honorable mention.
Barton earned All-Region honors for the first time to go along with her All-Big Ten First Team selection. The junior from Chandler, Ariz. led the Huskies with 400 kills to become the first Husky to reach 400 in a season since Claire Hoffman in 2022. Barton also had 220 digs, making her one of just five players in the Big Ten with 400 kills and 200 digs. She reached double figures in kills in all but three matches this season.
Mateskaย became the first Husky freshman to reach 300 kills since current UW assistant coach and former AVCA National Player of the Year Krista (Vansant) Hendrickson did so back in 2011. She finished with 326 and she ranked second only to Barton on the team with 2.96 kills per set. Mateska's .257 attack percentage was the highest among all the Husky hitters with more than 100 kills. The native of Serbia got better throughout the year, as she postedย double-figure kills in 14 of the final 15 matches and she led or shared the team lead in kills in eight of the final 13 matches. She had six double-doubles for the season, and ranked third on the team with 2.17 digs per set. She also served up the most aces on the team with 30.
