Thomason’s Penalty Lifts Dawgs To 2-1 Win At Air Force
September 16, 2023 | Women's Soccer
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Tatum Thomason netted a late penalty as Washington (5-1-2) closed out its non-conference slate with a road win at Air Force (3-4-0) Saturday afternoon at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Huskies run their unbeated streak to five matches, securing four victories over the stretch.
Facing one of her biggest tests of the season, UW keeper Olivia Juarez stepped up. The junior made a career-high six saves on the day, including a handful of highlight reel stops.
The Huskies got off to a fast start, owning the pace of play in the early going. It paid off in the 36th minute as freshman Jadyn Holdenried tallied her third goal of the season to give the Dawgs the lead.
Receiving fellow rookie Maya Loudd's feed at the top of the 18, Holdenried took a big touch to setup her left, striking through the ball with enough power to hit the netting despite the keeper getting a glove to the attempt.
A few minutes later, the Falcons nearly struck themselves to knot things up. Setup off a set play, Air Force's Mia Otero bending shot from distance was destined for the top corner. Instead, Juarez rose high, pawing the ball over the crossbar.
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead into the half but the Falcons struck back early in the second, tying the match in the 52nd minute on Cassi Bych's goal.
Soon after, Washington brought on a bevy of second half subs who turned the tide back in the Huskies' favor. Notable among them was an exceptional effort from Avery Nguyen, who came on in the 59th minute and never came back off.
UW's hard work in the closing minutes paid off in the 81st minute, when Thomason was brought down inside the box. The sophomore picked up the ball herself, converting from the spot to secure a road victory for the Huskies.
With non-conference action in the rear-view, Washington turns its attention to its Pac-12 opener. The Huskies will face Cal on its home turf on Friday, September 22, at Husky Soccer Stadium. It will be a Purple Out in Seattle, as well as the team's Whole U match.
