Huskies Drop Pac-12 Opener to Cal
September 22, 2023 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – A late goal in the first half proved to be the difference between Washington (5-2-2, 0-1-0) and Cal (4-3-2, 1-0-0) Friday night at Husky Soccer Stadium.
The loss snaps Washington's unbeaten streak at five matches.
With little separating the two sides throughout the first half, Cal struck in the 39th minute. Collecting a short pass off a free kick, Mia Fontana created a yard of space on her left and placed her shot just inside the post to put the Golden Bears 1-0.
The Huskies came out of the halftime break on the front foot, chasing the equalizer. The Huskies would go on to double up Cal on shots in the half, 6-3.
Perhaps the best chance to tie for the Dawgs came in the 64th minute when Kalea Eichenberger got on the end of a header in the middle of the 18. However, the sophomore's attempt was too close to the keeper.
A few minutes later, Radisson Banks tested the keeper on her right. Avery Nguyen charged hard for the rebound but the keeper was able to collect to deny the opportunity.
The Golden Bears were able to salt away the remaining minutes to close out the affair on a brisk night in Seattle.
