Washington Falls To No. 13 Santa Clara
August 24, 2023 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – Washington (1-1-1) took an early lead in Thursday's matchup with No. 13 Santa Clara at Husky Soccer Stadium but couldn't hold on as the Broncos earned a 5-1 victory.
The Huskies were outshot 17-7 in the match. UW keeper Olivia Juarez made three saves on the evening.
Lucy Newlin got the Dawgs on the board first, rising above everyone else to meet Riley Brown's corner delivery, heading her first collegiate goal into the vacant net. Just over 13 minutes in, Washington led 1-0.
However, the Broncos rebounded 10 minutes later, scoring themselves off a corner as Rachel Bastone headed Sally Menti's near post feed, just beating Juarez, who got fingers to the attempt.
Jordyn Crosby put SCU ahead in the 37th minute, finishing off a counter to make it 2-1 in favor of the away team, a score that would hold through the half.
Menti converted a penalty in the 66th minute and Farrah Walters scored in the 70th and 78th minute to secure a brace, closing out scoring for the evening.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday, hosting San Diego at 1 p.m. PT at Husky Soccer Stadium.
