UW Falls In Prince Albert Final At Henley; Dawson, Olson Earn Medals
July 02, 2023 | Men's Rowing
HENLEY-ON-THAMES, U.K. โย Washington's men's coxed four fell to a crew from Oxford Brookes University Sunday in the final of The Prince Albert Challenge Cup on the final day of the 176th Henley Royal Regatta.
ย
Two UW alumni rowed in winning crews as Jacob Dawson '16 won The Grand Challenge Cup as part of an Oxford Brookes and Leander Club eight, and Evan Olson '19 was part of an Oxford Brookes eight that won The Ladies' Challenge Plate.
ย
In The Prince Albert Challenge Cup final, the first race of the Sunday schedule on the Thames, the Huskies took the lead from the start, edging in front of the Brookes crew and holding a slight advantage throughout the first portion of the race.
ย
However, in the home stretch, the defending champions from just up the road in Oxford, England, put on a move and rowed through the Huskies, successfully sprinting to the finish line to earn the trophy for the second year in a row.ย
ย
Seven UW alumni rowed in five other finals Sunday at Henley.
ย
In the first of those five races, Olson '19 and Peter Lancashire '21 squared off for The Ladies' Challenge Plate, for intermediate men's eights, rowing for Oxford Brookes and Leander Club, respectfully.
ย
Olson's crew won the race, holding off a game challenge from Leander to win by just three feet.
ย
A few races later, in The Visitors' Challenge Cup, former Husky oarsman Mattijs Holler, who won the same event last year as part of a Husky coxless four, rowed for Leander Club against another Oxford Brookes crew. Brookes came out on top again.
ย
Canadians Jack Walkey '23 and Joel Cullen '23, rowing for their national team as Maple Bay R.C., were both members of the UW varsity eight in 2023. They took on the British pair of Ollie Wynne-Smith and Tom George, who were both in the Great Britain eight that won bronze at the 2020 Olympic Games, in Theย Silver Goblets & Nickalls' Challenge Cup.ย
ย
The veteran Brits, rowing for Leander Club, held off a late challenge from Walkey and Cullen to earn the victory.
ย
The final for The Grand Challenge Cup, Henley's oldest event (first held in 1839), pitted the Canadian National Team (as Maple Bay R.C.) vs. the British National Team (Leander Club & Oxofrd Brookes), with a UW alum in each.
ย
Will Crothers '09, a three-time Olympian who was in the last Canadian crew to win the Grand in 2008, rowed in the Maple Bay crew; while Dawson, who was also in the G.B. eight that won bronze in Tokyo, rowed in the British shell.
ย
The British crew, which won the Grand each of the last two years, retained the title, commanding the race from the start, and giving Dawson the second Henley medal of his career, as he also won The Stewards' Challenge Cup in 2018.
