Washington Opens Regional Play with 9-5 Win Over DBU
June 02, 2023 | Baseball
STILLWATER, Okla. β Behind a seven-run fifth inning, Washington (35-18) opened its NCAA Tournament run in victorious fashion, defeating Dallas Baptist (45-15) 9-5 on the opening day of the NCAA Stillwater Regional at O'Brate Stadium.
Β
Sam Boyle picked up the win in relief, allowing one run over 3.1 frames, striking out four. Starter Stu Flesland III took a no decision, allowing four over 4.2 innings.
Β
While the Husky offense was settling into the early innings, Flesland was working around trouble to keep the game scoreless. The big lefty left two runners on with back-to-back strikeouts in the first and used back-to-back punchouts in the third to strand the bases loaded in the third.
Β
With nine straight batters retired by DBU's Ryan Johnson, Will Simpson broke things up in the fourth with a sharp single to left. Coby Morales followed up by shooting a double down the left field line giving the Huskies a brief lead at 1-0.
Β
The Patriots punched back in the bottom half as a Nate Rombach double and George Specht single knotted things up at a run apiece at inning's close.
Β
It didn't take the Huskies long to strike back. Jeter Ybarra worked an eight-pitch walk to leadoff the fifth before Michael Snyder tattooed a 2-2 offering, sending the ball completely out of the ballpark for a two-run shot, reclaiming the lead for UW.
Β
A trio of singles by Sam DeCarlo, Cam Clayton and Simpson got another run in for the Dawgs, with Coby Morales' grounder scratching across another run.
Β
Johnny Tincher put on the final touches, clobbering a three-run blast past the left field wall. By the time the inning finished, the Huskies had batted around and put seven runs on the board to take control at 8-1.
Β
The DBU bats started to heat up as well, with the Patriots plating three in their half of the fifth to draw closer at 8-4. However, Boyle came out of the bullpen with two men on and produced a popup to limit the damage.
Β
A Specht RBI single in the seventh cut the Husky lead to three but once again, Snyder stepped up, hitting the gap in left-center to plate Ybarra all the way from first and restore the four-run lead.
Β
After a double play cut down a Patriot threat in the eighth, Josh Emanuels entered in the ninth and quick set down DBU in 1-2-3 fashion to lock down the victory and send the Dawgs into the winner's bracket.
