Dawgs Take Apple Cup Series Over Cougs With 8-2 Win
May 07, 2023 | Baseball
PULLMAN, Wash. โWashington (28-14, 13-10 Pac-12) jumped on Washington State (27-19, 8-15 Pac-12), early and rode the momentum to a series clinching win on Sunday, locking up the Boeing Apple Cup matchup with an 8-2 victory on The Palouse.
ย
UW starter Jared Engman allowed two runs on five hits over 4.2 innings. Sam Boyle picked up the win in relief, tossing 2.1 scoreless with four strikeouts, while Grant Cunningham closed out the final two innings.
ย
Washington wasted no time in getting the offense going. Cam Clayton drew a leadoff walk, with Coby Morales and Will Simpson following with back-to-back singles. AJ Guerrero then got the Dawgs on the board, just lifting a single over the shortstops head to plate a pair.
ย
Washington State answered with a run in the home half, but Morales got the run right back with an RBI single in the second and Simpson added another on a sac fly to make it 4-1 after two.
ย
After Michael Snyder dropped a bomb into the trees in dead center, McKay Barney reached on a single up the middle and Clayton roped a double to the left-center gap, scoring the speedy Husky centerfielder to put the score at 6-1.
ย
The Cougars pulled a run back in the fifth but Boyle came in out of the bullpen and shut down any further damage, getting Sam Brown swinging to end the frame.
ย
The two sides traded zeroes for back-to-back innings before the Huskies went back to work. Jeter Ybarra led off the eighth with a double laced to the gap in right-center and Aiva Arquette followed with a big swing, clobbering a two-run homer to center, pushing the UW lead to 8-2.
ย
Comfortably ahead, Cunningham slammed the door shut, retiring six of the seven men he faced to lock up the series in Pullman.
