April 06, 2023 | Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. – Washington (19-8, 6-4 Pac-12) battled back from a ninth inning deficit on Thursday, getting the final say in a back-and-forth 13-8 affair in the first game of its series at Arizona (14-13, 3-10 Pac-12).
Stu Flesland III took a no decision, allowing six runs over six innings. From there, the bullpen shined.
Sam Boyle struck out a pair in his scoreless inning, Gianluca Shinn retired the only man he faced, earning his first win. He handed the ball to Case Matter, who set the side down in order in the ninth.
Coby Morales gave the Huskies the early advantage, demolishing a ball to dead center well over 400 feet for a 3-run homer.
The Dawgs tacked on two-more in the third on Michael Snyder's single up the middle. However, Arizona answered with two runs of its own to bring the score to 5-2.
Cole Miller gave Washington a run of insurance on an RBI grounder in the sixth but in the bottom half Mac Bingham turned around a three-run homer to left, deadlocking the game at six runs apiece.
AJ Guerrero gave the Huskies the lead back briefly in the eighth with a line drive shot to left, blasting it 404 feet. However, the Wildcats responded with two in the home half to take their first lead of the night.
Down to its final three outs, U Dub stepped up. Sam DeCarlo led off with a single and the Pac-12's leader in homers did his thing, launching a no doubt bomb to left center to recapture the lead at 9-8.
The Huskies weren't done. Jeter Ybarra added two on an RBI single and Snyder provided the finishing punch, plastering a 455-foot nuke to left center.
Matter closed out the ninth in order, giving Washington its first win in Tucson since 2015.
