Washington Erases Five-Run Deficit, Clinches Series Over USC
April 29, 2023 | Baseball
SEATTLE – Trailing virtually the entire afternoon, Washington (24-13, 10-9 Pac-12) stormed back for the second straight game against USC (25-16, 11-9 Pac-12), scoring four runs in the eighth inning to stun the Trojans 7-6 at the Diamond on Montlake.
Kiefer Lord was dominant for much of his outing. Four of the six runs the righty allowed were unearned, while he racked up 10 strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Grant Cunningham got the win in relief, throwing 2.1 scoreless, while Josh Emanuels locked down his fourth save.
The Trojans capitalized on a fielding error at third base to get out to an early lead, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first.
Things started out promising offensively for Washington, with Cam Clayton and Will Simpson taking the first two pitches the Huskies faced for a single and double, respectively. However, USC got out with the bases loaded and took control from there.
A solo shot in the second doubled the Trojan advantage and USC tacked on two more in the third on an RBI single and a throwing error to go up 4-0 through two and a half.
Johnny Tincher got Washington on the board in the bottom half of the third, singling to left to bring in Will Simpson. However, UW failed to pull closer, leaving two aboard in the frame.
The Trojans scored a pair in the sixth to push their lead to five but the Dawgs answered right back with two of their own as Clayton smacked a sharp single into left, plating Michael Snyder and Jeter Ybarra. Yet the Huskies still faced a three-run deficit.
After nothing in the seventh, the Dawgs went to work in the eight to complete the comeback. Clayton got the scoring started with a single to left, bringing in Ybarra. After Simpson wore a pitch to load the bases, back-to-back singles by AJ Guerrero and Tincher knotted the game at six runs apiece.
For the second time in as many games, it was Coby Morales that came through in the clutch moment. With the bases still juiced, Morales charged up a pitch and sent a laser to dead center. Austin Overn was able to squeeze it but Simpson had plenty of time to scoot home, sending the home dugout and the home crowd into a frenzy.
