April 28, 2023 | Baseball
Β
The two sides battled in seesaw fashion all night long, with the Huskies coming out on top 14-12 in 10 innings.
Β
Stu Flesland took a no decision after allowing eight runs over five innings. Josh Emanuels collected the win, retiring all five batters he faced.
Β
Washington took the lead in the second on RBI singles from Michael Snyder and Sam DeCarlo, adding another in the third as Snyder got a sacrifice fly in the air to center.
Β
USC cut into the advantage with a pair of runs in the fourth, but Will Simpson's single up the middle plated Aiva Arquette to make it 4-2.
Β
Aided by a pair of home runs, USC put up five in the fifth to turn the deficit into a lead, with UW answering with a two-run blast from Coby Morales to cut the sudden deficit to one.
Β
USC tacked on a run in the sixth but Washington once again responded right back, first on Aiva Arquette's first career home run, a blast to center and then on AJ Guerrero's two-run nuke to left-center, regaining the lead for the Huskies at 9-8.
Β
The run on offense continued into the seventh as USC added four on a bases-clearing triple just inside the right field line to score three, scoring himself on a passed ball.
Β
The next half-inning, Jeter Ybarra and Aiva Arquette went back-to-back, shaving the deficit back down to a single run.
Β
Washington gave themselves a chance, putting up zeroes in both the eighth and ninth. With the Huskies down to their final out, Sam DeCarlo slashed a clutch single through the right side, bringing pinch runner Dalton Chandler across the plate to tie the game.
Β
Emanuels set down the Trojans in order to set the stage for the Huskies in the bottom of the tenth. AJ Guerrero shot a single through the right sideΒ and Morales followed with a charge, putting a dramatic stamp on the night with his second big fly of the game.
Β
QUICK HITS
β’ UW's 18 hits were its third most on the season.
β’ Every Husky that had a plate appearance recorded at least one hit, with seven different players collecting multiple knocks.
β’ The Huskies 2-5 hitters put up 10 hits on the night, including three-hit games out of Coby Morales and AJ Guerrero.
β’ Washington scored in six straight innings. Prior to the game, the Huskies had not scored in more than four consecutive frames in 2023.
β’ The Huskies' six home runs were their most in a game since at least 2015.
β’ Friday was the second two-homer game of the season for Coby Morales, who also went yard twice in the season opener at Santa Clara. Morales has as many two-home run games this season as one-home run games.
β’ Aiva Arquette's two home runs were the first two of his career. It was also the first multi-hit game of his career.
β’ After clubbing his first homer in a Husky uniform in the seventh, Jeter Ybarra smacked a double in the ninth. They were his second and third extra-base hits of the season.
