Home Runs Costly in Sunday Loss at No. 9 Stanford
April 23, 2023 | Baseball
STANFORD, Calif. – After jumping out to a 4-0 lead on Sunday, Washington (21-13, 8-9 Pac-12) couldn't make it stick against No. 9 Stanford (24-12, 12-5 Pac-12), falling 8-6 at Sunken Diamond.
Jared Engman received a no decision, allowing two runs on five hits over three-plus innings, matching his season high with five strikeouts. Josh Emanuels took the loss, surrendering four runs in 2.1 frames.
Both teams traded zeroes through the first three innings before trading blows in the fourth. Michael Snyder gave the Huskies the lead with one big swing of the bat, cashing in on three-straight walks with a mammoth grand slam 436 feet to left-center.
The Cardinal responded with a big fly of their own in the bottom half, with Malcolm Moore's two-run shot cutting the lead in half. The next inning, Carter Graham's two-run homer tied the game.
The Huskies regained the lead in the sixth as AJ Guerrero came across on a wild pitch. However, Stanford responded once again, hitting back-to-back solo shots and adding another un on a bases-loaded walk to go up 7-5.
Washington got a run back in the seventh on an RBI fielder's choice from Guerrero but the Cardinal extended the lead back to two in the eighth and the Huskies were unable to fight back in the ninth.
QUICK HITS
• It took Jared Engman just three innings to match his season high of five strikeouts.
• Michael Snyder recorded just two hits in the series but he made them count, launching a pair of big flies to total seven RBIs.
